Its not a coincidence that the same people that are offended by the way people donate to charity are the same ones who have problems with social networking (attention whoring) in general.

I've ben challenged twice, both via text, not social networks.

I'm going to post a video on this message board of me listing every charity I've contributed to in the past 6 months. In that video, I am going to specifically "challenge" you, Frank, and Hawg Ass to contribute to all of the same charities that I've listed. After viewing that video, will be be:

a). more likely to contribute to those charities than before viewing it?
b). less likely to contribute to those charities than before viewing it?
c). neither more or less likely?

FYI, if the roles were reversed, I would probably choose "c".

Also - in his 1st segment, Bernsie quickly touched on part of this, saying he's all for raising $$ for a good cause, but there is an extortion aspect to the video challenges that makes him uncomfortable.

Texting is a form of social networking isnt it?

Anyway, the answer to your question is A or partially C. More likely (could be a charity I wasnt even aware of) or the same.

Im not sure what were arguing anymore. You dont like the attention whoring aspect and Im just saying the attention whoring is built in

It's a seperate discussion, but I was not under the impression that texting is not part of social networking. Unless all forms of communication are part of that. In which case I am not against social networks.

I'm arguing that there a LOT of people that are doing this for the social aspect vs the charity aspect. And many people contribute to charity with seeking attention for it.

It can't be partially A or C, because I specifically challenged you on video to do something. If you don't accept the challenge, I will ridicule you. In front of others.

Don't a lot of people play in a golf outings qualify as this? Or go to parties or any number of "social" events that raise money for charity?

What about a fundraiser for little league or a school or something? Where does that fall on the attention whoring/social aspect line?

Right. I agree.

And my point is if any of us choose "C", then the video is purely for attention from the people I challenged as well as other people on this board

Well, I think if a person takes the time to video it and upload it, that means they care a little bit

It might be 95% look at me and 5% charity, but that still counts.

The worst part is that this is a trend that won't go away. You know someone at the American Sprained Ankle Institute is trying to find a way to go viral like this with a dumb campaign.

I didn't ignore it. I donated to a cause I probably would not have (because screw the YANKEES) - and still received additional pressure because I didn't make a wacky video for everybody to see.

It's similar to making a donation and then getting publicly ridiculed because you didn't donate more. That's a bad feeling for doing something for a good cause.

Isn't that a good thing then? Even if its social for some people, doesn't that golf outing or casino night or whatever STILL get money from those people who are there only for the social aspect?

Or does the money donated by people who did this bucket challenge purely to get likes on Facebook not count?
