Marathon now on FXX. Marathon will run 24 hours a day through Labor Day to show all 500+ episodes ever. However, now is the time to watch, because the few seasons are, by far, the best seasons.

This would be even better if I could get FXX in HD. How can you not broadcast in HD nowadays?

I have the first eight seasons on DVD, so I'm in no hurry. Let me know when they get to the ninth season so I can start cherry-picking the good ones from 9/10/11. After that, welp...

I stopped watching the Simpsons every week after the Who Shot Mr. Burns episode that ended the season when I was in 8th grade. I remember taping the episode that started the next season revealing the shooter, but one of my friends told everyone who was at the park what happened. Seen it a handful of times over the year since, but not very often. Was probably may favorite show through Grammar school.

The Halloween episodes are the most creative in my opinion.

I like Family Guy and Futurama better than The Simpsons, but have pretty much stopped watching any animation from the recent era.

I agree that the later stuff doesn't hold a candle to the earlier stuff, but even still, the later stuff is pretty good. Of course, I haven't watched an episode in five years.

Of course, nobody likes a gloater.

I watched at that age too, but then it was for sophomoric comedy. After 18 or so you should begin to pick out the social commentary. If folks stopped watching while they were kids then a good argument might be made as to whether or not they actually saw the Simpsons, imo.

I primarily stopped watching because South Park was better at sophomoric humor and eventually social commentary.

I doubt the Simpsons got worse. I just think other things came out that were better.

the writers got worse. and the stories just started repeating themselves. it happens...you can't keep a show fresh forever. even "seinfeld" was guilty of that.

It's very hard to argue about humor. I find it to be more subjective than other genres. My whole point was regardless of your opinion of the Simpsons, you're likely missing out on more than half of the show's quips if you only watched as a kid, just due to intellectual capacity and the limits of one's general social knowledge.

The Simpsons social satire was and still is very creative. They paved the way for South Park, Family Guy and others who took it to a hilarious new and sometimes low level.. still funny nevertheless.

The great thing about Simpsons is the terrific recurring cast of unique characters and celebrity voices they have integrated throughout their entire series - much like Seinfeld.

The first 9 years of the Simpsons were gold then the show fell off a cliff. The writing just completely went to hell and the show has been shit for over a decade. There are now more bad episodes than classics.

+1

Season 10 had a couple good episodes but for the most part I'll always remember the Simpsons for the first 9 years as well. John Schartzwelder was a comedic genius.

i loved season 10. "homer to the max", "sunday cruddy sunday", "when you dish upon a star", "30 minutes over tokyo", "maximum homer drive", "mayored to the mob", and "the wizard of evergreen terrace" were all hilarious. i enjoyed the treehouse of horror episode too, with the springer parody. good stuff. for me it started to drop off around season 11 and by season 13 it had really fallen off a cliff. didn't help that dana gould was one of the head writers. great comedian but terrible "simpsons" writer.

Like many office workers can relate to Dilbert comics, the early looks inside the Springfield Nuclear Plant, and Sector 7G in particular, are uncanny.

By far, the most influential show of my youth.

Forgot how crude and sexually-oriented the show was now that my 9-year old is watching episodes non-stop since this started. That said, nothing on TV will ever match up to the first 8 or 9 seasons of this show.

Former writers Bill Oakley (@thatbilloakley) and Josh Weinstein (@joshstrangehill) have live-tweeted large portions of the marathon with all sorts of nuggets and tidbits. Well worth scrolling through their TLs for the last 48 hours or so.

Also David Mirkin (@davemirkin), penny wise (@jon_vitti), mike scully, (@scullymike), david silverman (@tubatron)

They've taken the marathon experience to another level with the stories and photos.

I see that "The Principal and the Pauper" is on now. It's funny how the premise of one of the worst Simpsons episodes of all time is remarkably similar to the premise of one of the greatest series of all time.

it was a cheap shot but from what i remember, that was the joke. it just wasn't obvious enough...but the idea was that they were doing this on purpose to fuck with the audience. it could've been funnier though.

Ned: Roddy, go get daddy's burying shovel.
Rod: YAY!
Rod: You sure buried him deep, daddy.
Ned: Not too deep that the lord can't find him...and judge him!

I forgot how much I really enjoyed The Simpsons. The first week of this thing was awesome.

However, some of the episodes they are showing now are just awful. We stopped halfway through one yesterday.

I'm told some of the recent seasons are much better. I hope so.
