MLB "just threw a wrench into the Cubs's international plans"

Oy, please don't let this be their wriggle room when/if things don't work out.

Its odd because hasnt their larger stance been that Theo will rebuild the minors and it may or may not work?

In that case, they can claim victory. The system is highly ranked. That's all you can do....according to them right?

Plus the international excuse is already built in with the draft stuff

yeah, they've backed off that ledge now. Now it's just going to be harder to "sustain". Whatever.

The sustainability of The Plan was always dubious in my opinion because it was based on tanking and getting super high draft picks to stock the system. Once (or if) the Cubs become respectable at the MLB level thanks to these high picks, they won't be picking high anymore, and the can't-miss prospects won't be there for them.

Based on Bernstein's description, the Cubs were abusing the system to a pretty huge degree. They were taking on massive fines for operating outside of the rules and then planning on doing it again as soon as those penalties were done.

Why would anyone be shocked that this got shut down completely?

Or cry about it, for that matter.

But since they're supposed to be competitive next year going forward, I'm unclear (a) what the hell that really has to do with anything, and (b) did they think they would be able to exploit this 'market inequity' in perpetuity?

If this story involved the Dodgers, Red Sox, or (Allah forbid) the Yankees, holy Jesus Christ almighty on a rooftop with a fiddle and bow would there be many a confident affirmative nod amongst the presumed baseball intelligentsia for "getting" those fucking overspending, over-reaching, exploitative pricks.

The Rangers spent more on the International market last year than the Cubs did but let's not talk about that. The Cubs are the first and only team to exploit this loophole and this change is an injustice against only them.

The transition love fest was ridiculous. For Dan and Larry to say they learn something every time one of the football insiders are on, is bullshit. Half the time you don't even get new information from them. Bowen gives you the same shit every training camp, and every time the playoffs start. He should stick to his pumpkins.

I don't think they've said that at any point. I love people who just read this thread and then have their reactions.

It's exactly what he said. He said "the plan" was to dominate the Dominican by outspending everyone every other year when in fact they didn't outspend everyone last year. Lil Danny is so far up Theo's ass that he doesn't care what he says is even true.

he clearly said, this has no impact on the next four years. It impacts down the road when they no longer can lose and get great draft position. It's still a crybaby stance but not quite the stance you're depicting.

Dan is obsessed with this smart radio thing. Just said you won't find a smarter Bears pregame show. Funny from a guy that describes his show as (paraphrasing) two goofs just fucking around.

Kong did you ever see Kings version of the shining? Amazing acted by none other than Stephen webber that was verbatim from the book? Simply 4 hours of the finest film making ever. Hands down. Makes Kubrick and Nicholson look like hacks. Amatuers.

Yeah I saw that, it was good. Certainly closer to the book, but (clearly) I'm partial to Kubrick. He supposedly put a crushed red VW in The Shining just to give King a metaphorical kick in the pants:

I was actually being sarcastic. While I loved the book the king version of the movie was awful. Kubrick did such an amazing job interpreting the material and avoided many of the things that just didn't translate. King has always had an issue with it. The made for TV one was boring although verbatim.
