they should.

I'd like to see where the Cubs rank without Baez, Russell, Soler, Bryant et al.

You'd like to see where they'd rank if you removed the top 5 players?

Im gonna guess "not great"

BD... this is what BA goes with

What are the qualifications for a player to be on his organization's Top 10 Prospects list?

For a player to appear on a Top 10, he must not yet have reached the rookie minimums for at-bats (130) or innings (50) in the major leagues. Service time does not factor into this decision, so a player could spend three months in the big leagues while playing sparingly and still be eligible for a Top 10 list.

I'm curious as to how that is factored, thanks for the information.

The Cubs would probably still have a top 6 or 7 system even if you took out 2 or 3 guys.

With all of these prospects coming up, the Cubs may need a veteran mentor around to help them out. I'm smelling a Manny call-up in September.

He is being kind not to mention the low .200s averages of the MLB level prospects

I'm not expecting #2. I'd be hoping for middle of the pack. Sustained excellence and all that.

There is an opening on the 40-man roster. Filling it with Manny for September isn't a big deal because he will just be jettisoned in the offseason. Plus, Olt and Vitters are both done for the year, most likely, with injuries, so they could be moved the 60-day DL to make room for Manny, as well.

Hammy. Iowa's season is almost over. They could call him up, though, for September.

Going to be a crowded dugout in Chicago in September.

A little perspective on the volatility of even elite prospects.

Alex Gordon was leading the Majors in WAR (now 2nd), after years of being viewed as a near-bust. 4 years of very average play, now I think every GM in baseball would take him

Great point that's why I'm not giving up on Olt. Especially with the elite power numbers

Yeah but how long do you give a guy to figure it out? He may never do it . I'd say what Gordon is doing is a rarity 4 years in. Could you let Olt hit .190 for 3 years in the majors? Most managers would be run out town playing a guy with those numbers for 1 year let alone 2 or 3

I'd suggest a corner outfielder with 20 homer power leading the league in WAR might be an indictment of WAR.

We'll yeah they don't all turn out that good but I'm not sure how rare it is that guys become decent

Crede took a while didn't he?
Derek Lee was pretty bad in early years

I'm honestly not sure how rare it is. If they're 25 or under its a gamble to write them off imo

As usual, dWar is to blame

How bout a guy coming up at third and winning multiple GGs in the OF ? Pretty rare

As mentioned, it's the Defensive components that are messed up. I don't have any hard specific basis for claiming this, but also the positional adjustments for positions like LF and 2B put out a lot of noise. I remember that year Zobrist had, and remember it as very good, but I never thought of him as more than a good, not-great player. I'm not sure even a generationally-great defensive left fielder or second baseman can really impact a real club as signifigantly as say, upgrading an average catcher for a good one, or a decent CF with another guy with elite range. WAR is just another reference point to me, not the definitive measure.

Carl Edwards was the fifth ranked prospect.

Javier Baez does not qualify as a "prospect" for 2015 as he no longer was a rookie.

Either way, he was 2-2. Just had a bad error. Not sure if they ruled that one in the 9th an E or not, but would have been a tough play.

It was a lazy throw, no doubt, and obviously Baez's error, but there's some blame on the other end too, as it was really a pretty routine bounce for a guy who is heralded as such a superlative defender at first.
