This has been great. Seasons 5-9 are nearly flawless.

I forgot how much I really enjoyed The Simpsons. The first week of this thing was awesome.

However, some of the episodes they are showing now are just awful. We stopped halfway through one yesterday.

I'm told some of the recent seasons are much better. I hope so.

Ive heard the same thing Rick. I guess the last two seasons have been better. I'm gonna give this new season a spin and see if its worth my while.

Yeah 2-4 were good as well but I just love the 5-9 stretch. Season 8 is by far my favorite.

*Hank Scorpio
*Boxing (I’m definitely going to make orphans of his children…)
*Rodney Dangerfield as Burns son
*Burlesque house
*Van Houtens divorce (Marge hiding the Allied Biscuit crackers)
*Ned going into the insane asylum
*Chili Cookoff
*X-Files
*Pretzel Wagon
*Homer and Burns trapped in the Cabin
*Poochie
*Gay episode
*Beer Baron
*Santos L Halper and the new dog
*Frank Grimes

If you want to sit down and consistently love every episode, watch 8 and 6. Very few misses...

4 through 7 are nearly perfect. There are some hairline cracks in season 8 -- not so much bad episodes (I think even 7 had a rare Bad Episode: that one where Grandpa is an undersea explorer or some shit) so much as harbingers of bad writing to come within good episodes, if that makes any sense. By season 9, it's hit-or-miss, by season 12 it's damn near unwatchable.

The best I can do it break it down into three eras

Bad animation

Prime

Bad

You can break it down further to Bad Animation(1-3), Prime (4-8), Spotty (9-11), Bad (12-??), and Digital Bad (??-pres), but someone has to tell me precisely when everything started looking like high-definition Homestar Runner.

Third season had some episodes that were just as good as anything in the prime era, if a little visually rough. "Like Father, Like Clown" was season 3, so was "When Flanders Failed."

The bad animation is part of what made it so funny. Big Book of Hell bad, and funny.

Its just too damn long

If it ended after like 12, Id know the seasons but everything post 99 is just one big blob of suck.

The thing about the first 7 seasons is they happened when I was 10-17 years old. Ill bet a lot of the jokes would be even better now

Caught one of my favorites over the weekend that I hadn't seen in years when Skinner got fired. I love the Superintendent's critique -

"This is the last straw. First the horrible test scores, then class after class of ugly, ugly children..."

"I really don't see where the children's appearance...."

"Skinner!..."

Season 8 had the episode with Phish and Homer's medical marijuana.

Mad Men

Huh? Not sure if you're serious here but the Simpsons episode you referenced aired 10 years before Mad Men premiered. :?

It clearly became less consistent as the years went on, but there were still numerous classics into season 13.

Raging Abe Simpson and His Grumbling Grandson in The Curse of the Flying Hellfish...it's not that bad. it went into some weird action/adventure plot toward the end but it had a lot of hilarious jokes. ("ha tickety! highly dubious!" "ah del monte...enjoy them old man...they will be...your last".)

the ones that ended with action/adventure stuff ("The Twisted World of Marge Simpson", "In Marge We Trust") are kinda weak and showed a bit of desperation on the writers' part. But there was still a foundation of satire that worked. The show started to lose sight of that once they hired a new batch of writers that included Dana Gould, who was one of the worst writers for that show.

if you wanna get REAL with a simpsons discussion, i can throw down. i have spent probably more time than i should knowing too much about that show. and i never got a date with jennifer crittenden.
