Just drop the drama dude.

If you left the channel on after the Bears game on FOX, they talked about the NFl ruling on Domestic Violence...and they went to the new voice of chicago sports, Dan Bernstein who pulled out the big words for the interview, went into full serious mode and explained it was a 2 fold move by the NFL.

1. An attempt to make a PR move.

2. To maintain their antitrust exemption.

Hey, smart guy, how about they just did the right thing and it had nothing to do with the fear of the anti trust exemptions.

Wow, to think I used to listen to this pud.

While I am sure the NFL enjoys some privledges for the Anti trust, some legal protections, probably tax benefits (Yes, Mr Obama, you could squeeze more from them I bet!),,,,

But I do know that when the NFL has the most recent work stoppage, the NFL was going to go on attack. If they lost the Antitrust, they would be swarming the Friday night and Sat Night airwaves. Its the concession the NFL makes, no fri and sat games until Dec. This is why we have shit Thur and Sun night games.

So, while the Antitrust is valuable, the NFL does give up something to get that privledge and if you think one politician wants to be the one who says they allowed the NFL to go on friday night and take away HS football nights, guessing thats a no.

Guess they didnt teach that class at Duke.

Does the NFL have an anti-trust exemption? I thought only MLB had that.

After Ray Rice got two games, Bernstein was ripping the NFL, calling it a 'war on women', etc. Now, they make an adjustment (I'm assuming with the agreement of the players union) that actually sounds like a pretty good rule change, and that's still not good enough.

Did he say what he wanted the NFL to actually do or is there no solution that would quit his complaints?

Is that the same smart guy who didn't grasp the necessary components of an assault case.

Was I the only one who noticed the tonal change when Ham came on the radio, as he both knows what he is talking about AND presents it from a the non management perspective?

High school games would be taken away if the NFL broadcast on Friday night? Poor kids...

I believe they got theirs when they merged with the AFL. Part of it included not being able to relocate a team, which Al Davis sued to have revoked. Not impossible that Goodell gets the part about reserving Fridays for high school football revoked too.

I think if the NFL went to a schedule where they played games 5 days a week it would hurt the product long term.

I agree with Dan in that the NFL never "just does the right thing," but it was painfully obvious that he just wanted an excuse to act like he knows what an antitrust exemption is.

As I alluded to with Al Davis getting the second most important provision of the antitrust exemption revoked, it's not really that important to the league. It's not like baseball, where the antitrust exemption has been a Sword of Damocles since basically the day they got it.

They are at 3....and I think with 4 they would be really happy to have a Fri, Sat, Sun and Monday night game. 7 PM game on fri and sat nights...the ratings would kill. They actually might then can Monday nights those numbers would be so big.

I don't know, I think Thursday night is more valuable than Friday or Saturday. The NFL wants as much "water cooler" talk as possible, and the networks know TV ratings (for all shows) on Friday and Saturday are typically crap because by the time Monday rolls around, the buzz is gone.

Uhhhh No.

A featured Fri and Sat night game would do bigger numbers than the Thurs and Mon games. It wouldnt even be close.

The water cooler talk....Nooooo

Friday and Saturday night TV is ratings death.

Thats why the NBA makes sure they have a full slate almost every friday/sat night and use Thursday as a travel day, because the big ratings are on Thursday night, so they discard the good night.

the NFL #'s for a Fri or Sat game would be the #1 watching thing on TV each night and would out draw the Sunday or Monday night games.

Its why as soon as the NFL is allowed to play Sat Games, they do....

I think MLB has a broad-based monopoly status--i.e., you have to have the blessing of MLB to have any sort of pro baseball in the USA.

The NFL, I think, got a one-time antitrust exemption to permit the merger of the AFL-NFL (and maybe agreed not to have Friday night or Saturday games that competed with high school/college games?) Basically, it's ok if there are NO other pro-football franchises in a market or pro football league in the country and the NFL exists as a de facto monopoly--but the NFL can't go to court and get an injunction against the USFL/XFL/Arena league et al. Whereas I think MLB could put the legal smackdown on any attempt to start up a professional league that competed with MLB--a de jure monopoly.

Sorta like if there were only 2 cell phone carriers and they merged and given an exemption b/c there weren't any other cell phone companies around. Someone else could still come along and start a new cell phone company without the blessing of the merged company.

I think the bigger deal for the NFL at this point is its 501(c) tax-exempt status.

But the NBA's Thursday night games on TNT are marquee games, aren't they?

Also, NBA teams have to coordinate with NHL co-tenants (in the case of the Bruins, they have priority over the Celtics), and most NHL teams seem to prefer Tuesday/Thursday/Saturday. In Chicago, the Bulls get Saturday nights and the Hawks get Sundays, of course.

NHL avoids Friday night games at certain times of the season--Blackhawks don't play a Friday night game until November and the Stanley Cup playoffs seem to avoid Friday games as much as possible.

I bleive, but I am not sure, a Bears preseson game does better number than any NBA 'Marquee" game on Thur, Fri or Sat.

Putting any NFL game on any night would dominate TV.

And while I understand how well CSi or Big Bang or any other crap does, its not NFL ratings.

People dont say "I am not going out" or 'lets go somewhere I can watch CSI"....The NFL does change viewing habits.

The NFL playing more nights would be short term gain that would then be offset by long term apathy from players, viewers and attendees. Adding more nights would mean needing more players to play, else they will choose not to suit up for certain games (inter-conference mismatches being less important than division games). Bringing in more games means more games sat. Viewers aren't burning up the airwaves to see the Thursday night tilts unless they have some marquee value. Watching Jacksonville take on Miami or Oakland doesn't get the eyeballs. Finally, road trips are something that are planned out months in advance, and weekend games are the draw, not weeknights. Add in that home team fans may not be enamored with a cold-weather late season game featuring their hopefully 5-win team, and you start dealing with empty seats watching games. While the league can modify the blackout rule it still creates poor optics.

The strength of the shield has been making each game important enough on its own to be viewed in a broader context. Make that context too broad (too many nights) and people will just say lets wait until November to see what's worth watching.

I think the NFL had it right for a year or two before they got too greedy: wait until after Thanksgiving to open up the Thursday/Saturday games so that you can have more national games in the home stretch after the college season wraps up. A Saturday night game in December can be a nice novelty, or a Christmas Day slate of games irrespective of the day of the week, but Sunday/Monday/Thursday all year long is too much.

They dont have a choice. It is part of the 1961 Antitrust exemption they dont have Fri and Sat games, during HS football and college seasons.

do you know why Fox had the #1 team play on Saturday night in the Dallas dome? because it is a huge event with Huge TV numbers./

Which is why you will see them move to a 18 week schedule, and push the Super Bowel into President Day Weekend. There is also talk one of the reasons they are keen to have a London team, is that they can have Saturday games. The theory is that the Antitrust deals with games in the United States, not outside of the United States. If I can find the article I read this, I will post the link.

Saturday night has traditionally been a television wasteland (except in Canada, where that's Hockey Night), but I believe the NFL could change that. I just wish they wouldn't. We don't need that much football.
