But this isn't about the Sox, it's about the Cubs and how bad play from key players means that somehow expectations are elevated.

The Sox traded their primary closer or Eaton...the signed Abreu because they didnt have a 1st baseman...and they traded Peavy for Garcia....

All very good deals....but who do you think you are trading on this team for talent? 37 year old Ramirez? or The cuban missle?

I think Hahn made very good deals, but to expect him to do that again is foolish. I made this point when those deals got done.

And we all know how Jerry loves to pay for free agent pitching.

I have no idea who Hahn does or doesn't intend to trade, but if the Sox wanted to they could put together the bullets for a big name in a trade. But that's not the route I see them taking, smaller deals around the periphery to shore up the bullpen, LF and maybe another starter.

That's fine, those moves make the Sox a contender.

Again, not talking about White Sox here. Talking Cubs.

Specifically what pieces? And what big bat is available? How will they be able to pay for these additions? All the money is being set aside for extensions per your sources

Potential extensions, you doorknob. And I was merely referring to the meager amount of money saved not going through Arb with Beckham and De Aza.

I have absolute no idea who Rick Hahn and the org plan on doing.

I will try to use some simple math for you.

Contracts in 2014 that are done:
Dunn - 15M
Kornerko - 2.5M
Belisario - 3M
De Aza - 4.25M
Beckham - 4.175M

That is $28.925M that will not be on the roster next year. If one dollar is spent on the free agent market I expect you to criticize Hahn for bad money. Of course, next year or so they should be contenders according to the America plan so I am very curious on how to build a bullpen, fill 2/5 of a rotation, find an OF, DH and build a bench without spending a dime.

If the White Sox sign Victor Martinez, James Shields, Jon Lester or Max Sxherzer.... yes I will be upset. If they sign low cost guys to fill roles I will not be upset.

Good players are bad, and bad players are good.

Got it.

IMU, don't you remember how awesome Jeff Keppinger was? Or who could forget the greatness of Scott Linebrink. Didn't cost 15 million a year so great moves!

What's really bad is bad players who cost a shitload of money. Something all of those guys have very high likelihoods of becoming.

I'd rather have Justin Masterson for $7m a year over 2 years. At least if he sucks the Sox aren't biting the bullet on $28m a year until the end of of fucking time.

Yup, and Jeff Keppinger was harmlessly DFA'd because he wasn't so expensive that he had to play.

The goal isn't to be cost effective. The goal is to win. If being cost-effective is leading to that goal, then great.

You seem to disregard that, and would rather your baseball team be run like an ALDI or Woodman's.

You're right, that Dodgers - Yankees World Series we see every year is proof of that.

Btw- Aren't the Dodgers willing to package Urias to any team willing to eat Kemp's contract? That's what I call winning!

free agency is for the desperate. Price is going to cost infinity over a million years.

So will it be fair to characterize Cubs fans as expecting at least 86 wins next year?

Sure, whatever you want.

You can put me down for demanding "playoffs"

Baez is gonna strike out 200 times this year. I know if he were "my" prospect, I'd be having some major doubts right about now.

I forgot to ridicule how stupid a thought this was.

Avi is batting .235/.298/.435.

Like really really really stupid.

Im usually on the "strikeouts arent as bad as many make them out to be argument" but at this point, Im worried.

He could end up being Jose Hernandez. Right now that seems like a good bet.

He's got this long ass swing and he's vulnerable to breaking stuff outside. I assume in the earlier levels he adjusted to where the ball starts and where it ends up (more movement each level) so Im holding onto hope that he can do that.

But yeah, there is some doubt right now. I still think he'll be a major league starter at least.
