Well, that sucks.

I used to listen to him every Saturday morning.

You and I were the ones, huh?

Very sad, indeed. Getting old sucks.

Sorry to hear this. Like many, I grew up in a WGN radio household where am720 was on all day long. Wally, Roy, Bob & Betty...that was a long time ago.

Sad news. So this means the whole golden-age 720 lineup is gone now (Wally Phillips, Bob Collins, Roy Leonard, Ed Schwartz).

What? Why wasn't this posted here in this section a week or so ago? Before he died! :P

I grew up in a 720 house as well. Listening to a clip of him on the way to work this morning, brought back childhood memories and made me think of my mom. God bless her soul!

FYI - The clip was of him interviewing ALI before his upcoming fight with "someone" by the name of Leon Spinks!

RIP Roy Leonard. Elliott Harris and me had the privilege of interviewing him a couple years ago in one of his final in depth interviews. Link http://youtu.be/KopdOfPjjmU

Yeah, I think Nick started at WGN as a recurring guest on Roy's show. I'm sure it's a tough day for him.

He will bravely find a way to make it nearly entirely about himself.

I heard him on this summer, still reviewing Chicago theatre, was still very active from that conversation. RIP

That kind of arts/entertainment show that Roy Leonard did was kind of the direction I wanted WGN to go, to compete with WBEZ more than WLS. I'm sure Bob Sirott is doing more great shows about not putting ketchup on hot dogs, though.

oh man you shoulda listened to opie and jimmy norton (the smoldering remains of opie and anthony on SXM, which is an acronym that sounds like a type of kinky sexual fetish) on wednesday because not only did they invest a good 15-25 minutes talking about how rich vos was busting opie's balls for getting the generic store brand "america's choice" ketchup as opposed to Heinz (and Hunt's can go fuck itself too, says "yimmy", who is also #HeinzOrDie!), but they set up the much antitipated First Annual Opie and Jimmy Ketchup Challenge! for yesterday and the excitement was so palpable that people on the #1 O&A msgboard wackbag.com stopped posting in the daily show listening thread roughly 45 minutes into the program.

I think I was deprived of a real-time recap of the hijinks because those msgboard guys clearly didn't want to spoil the joy for those of us who go and listen to our "gregg and friends" shows on youtube or elsewhere later on in the day. GOAT radio and no doubt way more fun than jimmy getting on with anthony cumia on tuesday cuz that's the opester for you!

Loved listening to hm. Always seemed like I was listening to my Grandpa or a wiser being. Seemed so worldly and yet so down to earth. Gonna miss him. Nick D owes him big time.

Classy radio guy, one of the first names that should come up when talking about the all-time "voices" of WGN Radio.

I would see his TV work from time to time also, like when he took over for Frazier Thomas in hosting "Family Classics" (WGN's Sunday movies -- Thomas died in 1985). This guy was excellent.

Here's the Family Classics set, including the Garfield Goose painting:

"Family Classics" had access to the kinds of family-friendly movies that you simply don't see on broadcast TV anymore. I remember it aired Sunday afternoons after baseball season concluded, long before WGN 9 became part of the CW Network.

Boy, I hate to do this. As a multiple time winner of the Bob and Betty quiz, I can tell you they were on WBBM 780, not wgn. They were on mid-day. Bob passed away a couple of years ago.

To this day,the 1956 movie version of "The Lone Ranger" remains in my all-time favorite top 5 movies. They would replay that every year on "Family Classics"

Yup...you're right. I guess am720 wasn't on all day...almost though...

Opie is the 11th wonder of the world

That guy is honestly the worst. He has never in his life said anything funny or interesting. His entire contribution to the show is having a memorable name due to his red hair.

I mean he is the fucking worst

He's bitchier than Spiegel, believes his own bullshit more than Laurence, talks down to people like Bernstein while being dumber than Mike North

He's every bad radio thing rolled into one awful product

And yeah, going around filming people attempting to go viral is a perfectly stupid opie-ish thing to do.

Cumia the racist is mildly funny and he came off like George Carlin next to Opie. I feel bad for Norton.
