I thought maybe this show was going to break from the typically scripted viscerality of "reality" television. I hoped it would be a kind of thoughtful approach. I was wrong.

I was wondering whether producers give these people incentives to overly emote or do they chose people who overly emote as the contestants?

I felt the same way after joining this board. I was hoping for a sports Utopia and got Jerry Springer instead.

This is the type of show I should love. I was so bored in the first 30 minutes I had to find something else. I can't imagine watching this for a full year.

Good concept. Horrible execution. These guys don't have to even build their own shelter! They have an electrical box near the fence that they have to run to the house and they just so happened to have multiple people who knew exactly how to do it. That was the end for me.

Same, they just love showing the hot chick, guys drunk, fights, etc.

Once again, lowest common denominator.

Maybe another network will try it and actually do it with some REAL people.

I don't mind that they put radically divergent backrounds and mindsets on the show. That makes it fun. However, so much of it is contrived: homeless ex con goes crazy when you mess with his stuff, hillbilly brings whiskey, women have no problem with nudity in front of complete strangers with cameras filming them, fat woman refuses to eat less food (and surprise, she is pregnant), etc.

I watched the first hour and I'm done. The only reality show I have ever found worthy is The Amazing Race, and even that is occasionally stocked with people hoping to get their foot in the door of the entertainment industry.

Why do people watch this stuff?

Exactly. The concept is interesting with normal people having to start a society. Debate religion, culture, politics.

The average person doesn't go around raving like a lunatic at every stress that presents itself in a day.

Survivor is great. Real World/Road Rules challenge is too but you may be too old. The Amazing Race is great too. I'm a sucker for the Gordon Ramsey cooking stable. America's Got Talent can be good. The Voice was good at the start but now it is seemingly on every week all year.

I couldnt agree more. They ran it in the spring and fall, it was too much. Not to mention it was like 5hrs of programming a week.

Not yet.
