I'll never understand how these local kids don't get that they could own Chicago if they had an excellent season. The Dee Brown/Deron Williams team was all over the front page of the sports section (back when people still kind of read newspapers).

There's a huge Illinois alumni contingent in the Chicagoland area and an equally huge sleeper fan base that only pays attention when they are good.

But, they'd rather go try to own Philadelphia or Lawrence, KS. Don't understand.

It's just a very strange dynamic. I went from not caring about the Illini to actively disliking them by my senior year of high school. It wasn't from my parents either because they really didn't care about college sports.

I'm reformed now that I've left the area and I have a healthy dislike of Indiana to replace them.

I dislike Indiana basketball, but not football. The football program is an interesting exercise in inept major college sports. Like a harmless experiment.

You never know, though -- for decades Duke was a perennial football doormat, for example. I'd love to see IU trip up MSU, UM, OSU, PSU, Wisky, or Neb. -- especially on the road.

On the bb side, Crean is okay, but the fans of IU basketball are an annoying bunch overall.
