I cant let this go without pointing out it's inherent foolishness. There is no such thing as too much Elton John.

Madman Across The Water, and Honky Chateau are both masterpieces.

His 80's stuff is hot garbage.

You pair Picasso with Bob Ross and you're going to get some bad paintings.

Instead of happy trees you would get happy triangles.

The Happy Triangles...decent band name.

Kentucky Derby | Danza prepares to show he's the boss

Image

The theme song for the 1980s television show "Who's the Boss?" couldn't hit a better note:

Nights are long but you're on your way

To a brand new life,

Brand new life,

Brand new life around the bend.

The nights were long this winter for Kentucky Derby buzz horse Danza, a muscular sprinter with a rich, dark mahogany coat. But that brand new life might be just around the turn.

In the two weeks since Danza outfinished Ride On Curlin to win the Arkansas Derby by 4 ¾ lengths, the horse named after "Who's the Boss?" star Tony Danza is running with the confidence and authority of a serious Kentucky Derby contender.

He's the same sidelined horse that spent seven months over the fall and winter nursing a knee injury in Ocala, Fla.

"In the last month, he's definitely become a boss," said Aron Wellman, president of Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, the racing company that owns Danza.

"(Danza) wants to do what he wants to do when he wants to do it."

The horse got his name from Kelsey Marshall, Eclipse's director of partner relations, during a company brainstorming session.

The name honored Danza's sire, Street Boss, and embraced the toughness of Tony Danza, who in addition to acting has also won nine matches as a professional boxer and attended college on a wrestling scholarship.

The 3-year-old thoroughbred was always athletic, always muscular, always powerful, always tough.

Danza finished a close third in the Saratoga Special last August, becoming a highly regarded future Kentucky Derby horse.

But he fell off the map, Wellman said, after the knee injury that didn't require surgery. He recuperated at a farm run by trainer Todd Pletcher's father.

"It turned out to be the right move," Pletcher said.

The setback bred a horse with renewed confidence. He's sharp. He's frisky.

"He's got that King Kong mentality," Wellman said.

Onlookers said Danza "floated" as he worked out last week at Churchill Downs.

"It feels like I'm on air out there," said Danza's exercise rider Nick Bush. "It's so smooth. He's really bouncing."

The Arkansas Derby win — the first time the colt had raced farther than seven-eighths of a mile — clued in the rest of the world. Danza entered the race at 40-1 odds. Even his exercise rider Bush only bet $2 across the board on Danza. He thought that was enough.

Danza stayed in the leading pack the entire race, saving ground throughout on the rail under jockey Joe Bravo. He broke through on the turn for home to blow past Bayern and leave fellow Kentucky Derby candidate Ride On Curlin in his wake.

Tony Danza gushed with excitement on Twitter, posting links to stories of Danza's success in Arkansas. He's become so enamored with the horse that Wellman said there are plans for Tony to be in Louisville for the Derby.

But the Arkansas win didn't necessarily surprise Wellman or Pletcher.

How Danza won did.

"If I said I wasn't surprised, I'd be lying to you," Wellman said. "It hits you like a ton of bricks."

And now the bricks of expectation stack up as the Kentucky Derby draws near. The first week of training at Churchill Downs did nothing to quell the buzz after Danza's Arkansas run on April 12.

That he has what many consider the best name in the Derby adds to the lore. But nothing he's experienced this month would match what would come with a Derby win.

"There are two schools of thought: One that says the Arkansas Derby had to be a fluke," Wellman said. "The second is people delving deeper into his form and saying he hadn't done anything wrong and that maybe it wasn't a fluke.

"This could be the horse that's in the right place at the right time."

Yeah, Alyssa Milano has come a long way from that show in the '80s called "Who's the Boss?". Yet another show where Tony Danza's character was...wait for it...also named Tony.

Danza is my horse to come in 2nd, or upset the highly regarded California Chrome.

If you read the article, it mentioned that Danza rode the rail to get to victory, and he will be ridden in the Derby by Hall of Fame jockey Calvin Borel aka Bo-rail because he's known for riding the rail with his horses.

California Chrome appears to be a beast, though. In the last race, he dusted his competition and his jockey didn't have to go to his whip at all to convince him to run. His trainer said after the race that wasn't even close to being tired.

Im not expericenced other than buying a ticket here and there for the Triple Crown Races.

Can you bet that a horse will come in top 3?

Yeah if you bet him to show.

Yeah if you bet him to show.

But do you also have to pick 1 and 2?

Here's what I know about it

Each horse has odds and you bet on them
A trifecta is picking the top 3 in order.
A boxed trifecta is picking the top 3 in any order
Most owners have flowing white hair

Win is first place, place is second and show is third.

If you bet win the horse has to finish first. If you bet show the horse can finish first, second or third but you get less money on the 1st or 2nd payout.

RPB, you can simple place a bet to come in the Top 3 (which is called SHOW) as Hank said. I'd imagine that Danza's show price will probably be around 3-1, so if you place 20 bucks on him, you'll get back $60. That's not a bad bet. However, his win price will probably be around 10-1, so if you bet him to win that would be around $200-220. The odds will come out tomorrow around this time so I'll post them in the wagering thread then.

Yeah I think Baffert's hair has been white forever, they call him the Silver Fox. But he's more known for being a trainer than an owner.

Top trainer Todd Pletcher is another nearly white haired guy that you see a lot of.

By the way, he's the trainer for Danza.

Was Diamond Man half gray half brown? If so, I would have bet him big. Always have to bet the grays...

Yeah, he was a roan. His mother was Broadway Siren who was the best broodmare in Illinois. I was the first guy to realize that and I tried to buy her baby every year. I think I had three of them. I know one of the others was named Charley Choo Choo. We had high hopes for him but he died suddenly.

We bought Diamond Man at the Cottonwood sale in 1999. I think we paid around $50,000 for him. My partner and I figured we would each take a quarter and my partner's mom and dad would take the other half. But my partner's dad said, "Are you guys crazy giving that money for that clumsy looking thing? I don't want him." So we sold half to Shirley Levin, the old lady with the flowing white hair in the picture.

He trained down like a champ in Florida but we always had trouble keeping weight on him. He broke his maiden with Jim Curran driving. Curran was great once he got a horse on the front end. He could throttle down that speed like nobody else. The next week there was a stakes race and we used Dave Magee who was driving for us a lot at the time. For my money, Dave is the greatest driver ever, but his one weakness is that a real headstrong horse can get away on him once in awhile. Diamond Man got down to the three-quarters in about 1:23 which was really going for his second start as a two year old at that time. He just got beat on the wire. But that took a lot out of him and even though he won an elim at Springfield he was never quite the same the rest of the year.

In the winter of 2000-01 we had him down in Sorrento, Florida and he trained down good again. The weight was always a problem. He started the season slow and I began to think he maybe wasn't as good as we thought. He was still training real good though and seemed to be improving. One Saturday we put him in a minor stakes race at Balmoral and put Tony Morgan down to drive. He went off at 7-1 and I bet $200. Morgan uncorked him in the stretch and he won in 1:50.4. He was pretty much unbeatable the rest of the summer. We kicked the shit out of Rattle and Rock every week which was extra sweet because he was trained by that little prick Joe Anderson. Then in the Langley elimination, Diamond Man jumped it off for some reason. He had never taken a bad step in his life before that. He got back on stride and finished fourth but didn't make the final. He dominated the consolation but Rattle and Rock won the final and got Horse of the Year. That was some bullshit.

You had Campbell drive your horse? I'm actually impressed. Always knew Joe Anderson was a prick. I remember when he "invaded" from California in the early 90s. Always had a great UDRS. How did he become so dominant here? Juicer? Good horseman? He had some real good horses for awhile there in the mid to late 90s. Champion types. Big Tom is the obvious one. Pacific Flight, too.
