The unfortunate thing is that Briggs was the one who made Urlacher look good for much longer than he was but Briggs doesn't have anyone on the team who can do that for him.

Briggs would look pretty good as the second or third best linebacker.

Its because of the lousy scheme. A scheme where the Will linebacker calls the defensive plays and makes the sight adjustments. Too many times he is out of position or the defense is off balance. This scheme is not what allowed Briggs to excel, where the linemen got upfield in a hurry and allowed the linebackers to read and react. Now the linemen are asked to take on two gaps, get engaged, and hope the linebackers are free to get to the ball. Except they aren't free.

As for Conte, he's playing single high safety with too much ground to effectively cover. He is not, and more importantly should not be the key player making tackles. Again, the scheme sucks as it forces him to do too much and none of it particularly well. Defend passes in front of him, not let the ball get over his head, and come up and make the stops against the run.
