All we hear these days is political/personal issues surrounding sports. Ray Rice, gay players, Redskins fake outrage, yada yada yada. Yes, Ray Rice is a jerk. So was Bobby Hull... he beat his wife. Are there racists NBA owners? Yes, and there's plenty of racist people too. People like Bernstein and the Deadspin crew will be the first to take stolen private conversations to ruin a guy. Ok fair enough. Mr. Bernstein, give us a copy of every email you sent. Lets see how "pure" you are. Sports in supposed to be an escape from all this BS. People like Bernstein need to leave this industry. How in the world does the Score not resign an entertaining guy like McNeil, but is willing to give Boers 600k? If the Score continues with the Bernstein "serious issues" model, they are doomed. The Game is lurking.

True, how long do you think before they can get one? Once they do I believe WGN has the money to buy a couple big names

I don't have a problem with covering the larger issues in sports -- it interests me so much more than x-and-o Matt Bowen shit. That being said, there needs to be a pushback or counterpoint to the internet social justice movement, which I've always had reservations about despite my own social liberalism. I'm especially uncomfortable about the way it horseshoes back around to a weird sort of conservatism, where women and minorities are framed as delicate fawns and perpetual victims who can't rise above this status but for the grace of the cultural elite giving them the green light. This is pretty much where Gawker, ShitRedditSays, and Tumblr are at, and I don't like it.

Sports talk radio is just too cynical. Every decision is criticized on an after the fact basis. The injection of broader social issues like domestic violence, drug use, concussions, racial justice all increase the daily stream of hatred. Sports should generally be an escape. Instead, the chatter about sports just turns one into an angry fan.

I don't mind them covering the larger issues. But have some moderation and don't become an outrage miner. Also, stop with the concern trolling. Try having an opinion on an event or incident that can't already be guessed by people on a message board.

i don't consider any of those sites legitimate. internet "journalism" is such a joke. there is no professionalism at all and it just has a fourth grade level cafeteria air about it that it's hard to take seriously as anything more than just muckraking.

maybe it's a good thing for athletes to finally be exposed for what they are, because even when i was growing up we were still sheltered and thinking that every athlete was an honest, good person who served truth, justice, and the american way.

but the problem is that there's no substance to the criticism. it's just "see? see how bad this person is? so THERE! ha, GOT YOU!" well, thanks...yeah i know that there are bad guys in sports. what's your point? that i should just be appalled? so where do you go from here?

just the next expose.

Great points by W_Z, Zizou, and Curious Hair.

What's odd to me is that the media and general public don't seem to give a damn that Ben Roethlisberger and the most recent Heisman Trophy winner, Jameis Winston, are most likely rapists.

Exactly. To suggest either one is ruining your enjoyment of sports is to admit being an easily distracted fool.

Knowing how the sausage is made in professional sports does seem to make it less enjoyable. However, it is easy to forget about it when the games are being played so it isn't too bad.

I still have a real hard time being excited any time Brandon Marshall catches a touchdown. It's something I probably won't ever get over for some reason.

You mean the threads replete with posters lacking any semblance of self-awareness to the point they don't notice the hypocritical irony of incessantly complaining about personalities on a radio show - one they claim they can't stand to listen to - not being self-aware?

Who cares? About what? Why should I (you) care?

I've heard that posed about sports related topics on a sports talk station. Too many times. So when the sports talker wants to stray over the line to the peripheral, to the criminal, to the non-sports, those same questions become even more relevant. My problem is that the host is too arbitrary in each aspect, he rails on some too often for the cause of having something to rail about. He couches some beliefs to project others. He has a job to do, to get listeners, and he thinks he's really good at it.

The difference between Deadspin and other media outlets, a sports talker on one station and another is that they aren't concerned with getting correct information or imparting news as much as they are trying to get eyeballs, ears, or clicks. Just like with "reality TV" shows and TMZ, I have a choice I can exercise. I just wish the choice for sports talk in Chicago was better, cartoons on the one station and community college on the other.

Yeah, I care enough to want Dan McNeil to return with his retread show, just because I don't care for the other stuff.

I don't mind sports shows discussing social issues as long as it doesn't hang a cloud of negativity over the entire show/station. Ray Rice and Jerry Sandusky are assholes. JRW? Not so much. It would be nice if fans were allowed to enjoy things from time to time.

You can't. Everything has to be over analyzed and talked to death. Gone are the days of people talking in the simplest terms about if last night's game was great or rough. No every Bears game is a pendulum between first draft pick and super bowl. And don't even get me going on what B&B and the like do to 82 Bulls games a year.

It's not even the over analysis that bugs me, it's the flat out rage any time any fans tries to derive pleasure from sports. It seems like the actual act of enjoying sports angers Bernstein these day.

Sports radio has become lazy radio. The social justice aspects are easier because they require less in the way of real analysis. All you have to do is read few articles and begin pontificating. I actually like the technical Matt Bowen type of stuff. At least he's talking about the actual game.

I think what also is lazy radio (as opposed to an 'agenda') is the 'nothing matters except championships' thing. It just means you don't have to really pay attention to a Bulls game in March.

I don't think the Bowen stuff is as bad as Bernstein joining in. Let the experts expert, let the reporters you have on report, hosts should just make funny noises and keep it moving.

I've felt this way for a while too, particularly because so much of this discourse seems to be about social signaling one's superiority than actually doing for any real cause aside from taking to the Twitter muscle. At the same time though, many instances of pushback like #gamergate are just so utterly putrid that I sometimes end up thinking I'm too hard on the sjw types.

The nothing matters except a championship thing is also lazy radio. Bernstein uses it as a means of not discussing the actual game. He used that argument as well as the no one can win a championship except Lebron argument as a way of deflecting from his lack of basketball acumen. One of the main problems with the local stuff is just that; its local. When Chicago teams are not good there is very little interest. Thats why there is such a prevalence of social justice on local airwaves. There definitely is a perception that Chicago fans do not wish to discuss out of town teams. Its one of the main reasons that ESPN gets ripped. ESPN does have its flaws but overall their shows are better. The hosts are simply more informed. The score's lineup is weak in general. Bernstein has been marketed as the go to guy but his actual knowledge of sports is lacking. He has attempted to be more of a personality in recent years and this has made it worse.

I've come to despise Deadspin - really all things Gawker.

I'm a huge car guy and love some of the content on Jalopnik, but Deadspin, like Jalopnik, has become full Gawker bleed over. 90% of the posters sound JUST like Bernstein. The manufactured outrage. 'I'm a pasty upper middle class Jewish kid from the suburbs, but I'm offended at something directed towards left handed black Inuits'.

Remember the Abbatacolla 'outrage' over the Flowers play at home plate and Hawk's call? The 'wear skirts next'. Abbatacola and Bernstein went on an on about how Hawk OFFENDED - HE OFFENDED - 50% of the population and good portion of the fan base. While in the real world, not one woman gave one tenth of one turd about it?

That's the majority of posters/content on Jalopnik/Deadspin/Gawker.

And it's the epitome of Bernstein and his hypocrisy. His diatribe was (and I paraphrase) - 'yes, Hawk is a dumb hick because women wear skirts and by saying that, he is saying that women are weaker then men'.

...and then he goes on to rip the WNBA and tell us that it's terrible basketball.

THAT is Dan Bernstein in a nut shell.

Gotta go - my uncle has cancer and I think Bernstein's kid came up with a cure for it in science class today. At least that's what he tweeted about.
