A few days ago Bernstein went over a list of the best "prospect clusters" in baseball over the past 20-30 years (e.g., a few years ago, the Brewers had Fielder, Braun, Weeks, etc. coming up at the same time) and there were some pretty impressive groupings. To Bernstein's credit, he conceded that the scary common factor among them was that none of those teams ever won anything...which of course he will point to when the same happens with the Cubs.

As much as I like Marcus Semien he has pretty bad odds to be anything at the Major league level. That said, the Sox should give him a shot.

What constitutes a "prospect cluster"? Three prospects? Four?

The Giants had Matt Cain, Madison Bumgarner, Tim Lincecum, and Buster Posey all arrive within a few years of each other. All were highly rated prospects. I think that worked out pretty well for them, unless winning two WS titles doesn't count as winning anything...

That was the strange thing -- as I listened to him set up and then go through the article, I thought he was trying to show support for why The Plan was certain to be a success. But when he got to the end, I was thinking to myself that those teams he listed never won. And then he said pretty much the same thing ("uh-oh, you know what's scary about this?..."). So based on his propensity to carry water for Theo, I think he realized too late that the article actually worked against him. He then tried to say that those teams never won because they were predominantly small-market clubs that couldn't hold on to their players and the Cubs wouldn't have that issue. :lol:

He might be right. Bryant only has 47 HR's and 156 RBI's in a year and a half.
