Oy, that is brutal. For whatever reason, he turned into the pitch and it hit him straight on. Oddly, his parents were in the stands.

The 1st base umpire that called that a strike can call it a season. Maybe a career.

He was not offering at that pitch. And he's gushing blood from his face and he's getting carried off on a stretcher. And.......it lead to a bench clearing incident.

That guy sucks at his very simple job.

Judging by where Fiers appeared to be looking/aiming, the release point and the grip (four seam fastball? rising into the hitter), it was meant to go right where it did. Not saying Fiers meant to hit Stanton in the face, but it appears to have been a brush-back pitch that Stanton didn't get out of the way of.

Didn't they say it was 88mph?

Not really the speed of an intentional brush back pitch

Fiers doesn't throw much harder than that, and I didn't see it live, but there is nothing that can convince he threw at him. First by the immediate reaction and then the way he was after the game. I thought he was going to cry.

I think the more upset you are, the more likely you were trying to do something you shouldn't have been doing. It's guilt overtaking you.

Maybe, but I feel very confident that was not the case here watching him for the better part of a half season. Hell, the Brewers pitchers don't ever hit anybody on purpose, the fans are always griping about how much the batters get hit and the pitchers don't retaliate.

He called that a strike? Did he think it hit the bat?

No, for whatever reason he ruled he swung.

Well, he did swing. I'm not that clear on the rule. If a guy swings and then gets hit, it isn't a HBP? In this case he wasn't swinging in an attempt to hit the ball, he was swinging in an attempt to get out of the way.

Another rule that has a lot of ambiguity is the attempt on a bunt. A guy will square to bunt and it seems like it's 50/50 whether he gets called for attempting.

Then I guess it's a strike. But like spanky said, He wasn't offering at the pitch.

I'm not sure if it really matters. A swing is a swing.

This happened in a Little League game I was in as a kid. A guy on our team got hit and in the process of jumping back he shifted the bat from his right shoulder to his left and the ump called it a swing.

Dumbest call I've ever seen. It's freaking Little League!

To all the young ball players out there if you turn your entire body into a pitch there is a very good chance you will get hit in the face.

From Quality Coaching Baseball

If the ball touches the batter as the batter swings at the ball. This basically means that if the batter is swinging at the ball and the act of swinging has caused the ball to hit the batter, then the ball is a strike. Example: Batter swings and the ball hits him on the forearm as he's swinging. The ball is dead and it is a strike. If the hitter has two strikes, it is strike 3 not a foul ball. This isn't called often as most of the time the player will stop the swing and be hit by the ball. In that case most umpires will determine that the player is attempting to get out of the way by not continuing the swing. So, even though the act of swinging has caused the ball to hit the batter, the umpire may determine that player attempted to get out of the way and award the batter first base.

One of the first things they teach you in Little League is how to "turtle". It's amazing how many big leaguers don't do it.

In this case, I'd say two strikes.

Looked like Stanton never even saw the ball.

ProTip: open your eyes while at bat

Maybe he was in "take" mode and not really focused on the pitch. all he had to do was turn his head.

Nice. And yes. Also...I was called "out" because when squaring to bunt I supposedly stepped on the plate! Not one of my better games!
