For threatening James Foley's parents with prosecution for thinking of raising ransom.

You're late and this definitely isn't new. It's the law and I understand why they explained the law to them. I would have ignored it.

 You're acting like this happened years ago.

And yeah the law is the law. We should always trust the government. Clearly they handled the James Foley kidnapping very well.

They tried to rescue him but had bad intelligence. It's an occupational hazard and no one should blame the government for his death. As I said I would have risked going to prison for my child. There wouldn't be anything our government could tell me that would stop me.

I'm not blaming the government for his death. I'm saying it's extremely tone deaf to threaten prosecution in this case and it just reenforces the notion that the government doesn't give a fuck about their own citizens.

They explained the law to them. I wouldn't say that was a threat. They've looked the other way when ransoms have been paid in the past. The Foley family IS blaming our government for the death of James Foley.

No they aren't. They are rightfully pointing out that the government doesn't know what the fuck they are doing and therefore shouldn't be making a big deal about letting them deal with it.

Even government officials are agreeing with this nomination by the way, calling it utterly idiotic.

So the government doesn't know what it's doing because it didn't lose it's collective shit over one guy?

I have no idea how you surmised that. I made it perfectly clear what the nomination was for in the OP.

You want to make a case that the US government has handled this ISIS situation correctly, then by all means go ahead.

I think you took extra dumbass pills today.

You asked where I "surmised it", I posted your own words, literally the post before mine. Because of that, that also means I think the government handled "this ISIS situation correctly".

I mean, if you're not remotely interested in a discussion, at least have the common courtesy to say so.

Don, stop acting fucking dopey. I said clear as day in the OP what the nomination was for. Nas even acknowledged they had bad intel and fucked up the supposed rescue attempt, but that's not what the nomination was for. I was just elaborating on why the Foley family had a right to be upset with the government's entire response.

I understand the feelings of the parents, but paying a ransom only encourages more kidnappings and ransoms. The government should never pay a ransom.

I think it was probably a moot point anyway...wasn't ISIS asking for $150m or something like that?

Correct; not only do you encourage more kidnappings, you're then directly funding their operations which would include, among other things, ... more kidnappings. Apparently, ransoms are Al-Q's #1 income revenue stream; quite the market inefficiency.

http://www.nytimes.com/2014/07/30/world/africa/ransoming-citizens-europe-becomes-al-qaedas-patron.html

... Yet the fact that Europe and its intermediaries continue to pay has set off a vicious cycle. “Kidnapping for ransom has become today’s most significant source of terrorist financing,” said David S. Cohen, the Treasury Department’s under secretary for terrorism and financial intelligence, in a 2012 speech. “Each transaction encourages another transaction.” ...

I'm sorry (& this may sound harsh) but, this nomination must be denied as must the sympathy/victim card of the Foley family.

The Foleys assigning blame to anyone but the murderers who physically killed their son is one of the more ridiculous things I've read this week. It's almost as ridiculous as assigning blame to Foley & his family when American lives are lost in that part of the world because of the media induced hysteria & military incursion over his gruesome murder.
