Actually, the 2 stores that evovled into Toys R US are extinct and thats why they are all on the same line. of course for you I should have typed a ----> so it could be clearer.

Zayre in Bolingbrook back in the 70's was like Walmart to us. It had everything except groceries. It was down in that shopping center area with A&P Grocery, Kinney Shoes, The Gap, Mister Quick's and Denny's.

I think the only thing that still exists is Denny's. Before A&P and Zayre, all we had was Totura's Grocery Store and then they put up a 7-11 right in front of Totura's.

Anybody remember Woolworth's, SS Kresge, Community? Nice memories for us old guys. Thanks, bigfan.

I also vaguely recall my mom taking my sister and me to some dime store called Karr's on the Northwest side of the city. Every October they had a fantastic assortment of costumes and novelties for Halloween. At least in my memory, it was a magical place.

This is a cool site.

I didn't know Mr. Z's in Lombard closed up. When I lived there for a few years I loved this place. Could do my shopping and not be surrounded by the savages at Jewell or Ultra. I guess the great things about an empty supermarket just cant be sustained over time.

Midget, Dolphin and JORR probably remember Cut Rate Toys on Devon and Central. Even if you never set foot there, you pored over the smudgy, back page ad in the Sun Times. You imagined the place was like an airplane hangar or something. I think it was just a deep double storefront.
