That was one of those places where the added extra ingredients to the Chicago dog. Like Byron's or that place on Irving across from Sabatino's, Bowser Dog? I don't want lettuce or raw cucumber, or green pepper on my dog. The standard Chicago hot dog is a perfect recipe. It requires no additions.

The guy who franchised all of them was Irvings son in law, thats when they had like 20 and then the divorce came in and Jeff, Irvings son in law was ousted. He started the U dawg U places

Jeff from U Dawg U was Irving son-in-law? I didn't know that. Are there any U Dawg Us left? I think he had a couple of them going for awhile. The one at Touhy and Central I believe is now a Dear Frank's. Is the Irvings you're talking about still in the little strip on Lake?

That's exactly what it was. My Mom loved it. We would get hot dogs and she would take all that shit off. Free salad. To be fair, this was before the internet, when nobody cared who put what on a hot dog except Mike Royko.

There used to be a U Dawg U in the shopping center at W. Touhy and Niles Center Road in Skokie.

When we would go to meetings at the printing plant in the mid-nineties, it was a must to either go to U Dawg or Jack's Restaurant for lunch.

Now the printing plant is Skokie Police HQ.

Great find, TS! My mom also loved that place--it was her go-to hot dog stand for much of her youth. I wish more of these joints would have survived. Like Frankie Machine, though, I guess we have to get used to saying goodbye to the old days and the old ways.

There was also one at Thomas and Rand in the confluence of Arlington Heights and Prospect Heights, right across from Hersey. I remember going there with my dad to buy a door, which he turned on its side and placed on two file cabinets as kind of an ersatz desk. A desk with a big hole in it. Lasted like 18 years, too!

Does anyone else remember the Town and Country Mall at Palatine/Rand/Arl Hts Rd? Weird little mini-mall with a Garibaldi's, a Kroch's and Brentano's, and a video arcade. I think it also connected to a Service Merchandise, which yes, was awesome the way stuff would come out on the conveyor belt.

Hell, for that matter, just Lakehurst Mall. I had a childhood/family friend who lived right across Waukegan rd. from it. I remember going there, hitting the cinnabon and some pizza place in the bottom floor.
I was like 8.

So the guy gives me his bar for a night, has some hooker/bartenders in there and has Detroit Jr playing piano for us. he makes these jugs of Blue, Yellow and Red stuff...shots...Beers...etc...it was a top night of drinking in my life. one of 3 of which I passed out at some time. had to be 200 of our friends there, next thing I know, I am sitting on the piano bench with Detroit singing 'Walking to New orleans..." and there is about 7 people left and Earl is closing up...2-3 hours missing in that night!!

I do remember sitting at the bar and he is telling us stories of partying with Hells Angels, Heffner, Belushi, Steve Goodman, Murray....and I just thought he was full of shit, then I find out they guy was a legend.

When i lived on Southport, there was a bakery. 3 European sisters, only open on Fri, Sat and Sun. Open from 6 AM-12. OJ, Coffee, Milk and bread, pastries, danish, rolls, etc.

Hungover, wake up, hat on, walk about 50 feet, Say Hello to the ladies....they pulled a Sarkis (Estimated cash total),....Hmmmm $5.00....went home, OJ, Milk, cimanmmmmannin rolls...life was good.lol
