My facebook feed, and this board the past two days would disagree with you.

What exactly are baseball fans doing after the game is over?

Typically, they're asleep well before that point.

This is slightly interesting but totally irrelevant. The NFL dominates TV ratings because people want to watch football. Baseball has tried to make itself as ubiquitous as the NFL but it cannot do so because it is not as popular. With the notable exception of the Superbowl, people are not watching the NFL to see commercials. The extent to which NFL owners profit off football is reflective of their business savvy and the sport's largely unchallenged stature in American culture.

People "want" to watch football because it's easy. The same way they "want" to eat McDonald's.

Yes, with baseball in this analogy being a raw horse dick, like they used to do on Fear Factor. Nobody much wants to eat that, you've got a point.

No, not baseball: the Cubs.

He's what I used to be: a huge Cubs fan. I'd have told you at the time that I was a baseball fan, but once I had enough of the Cubs, I realized I didn't give much of a shit about the sport. Disabused of my Cubs fandom, I realized that the sport actually pretty much sucks. I think this is how many, if not most baseball fans are. If their franchise folded up, or if for whatever reason they gave up on them for good, they'd be done with the sport in its entirety. There's not many people who will sit down and watch games not involving their team, as World Series ratings bear out. Baseball simply isn't very entertaining; without a strong passion for a given team, few would choose to watch it, especially with the endless choices of entertainment available today.

You could make that exact same case about Football in the pre-fantasy years and could say it right now if fantasy and gambling ceased to exist.

Its not the 11 minutes of action during NFL games that people love. Its the gambling, the camradery, the parties, the wings, the weekly celebration etc.

I wonder if you asked those polled to name 3 players from each NFL team if they could do it. Id guess most couldnt.

I think anybody without a fantasy football team would be hard pressed to do that. I doubt I could name three from every team. I don't even know who the QB is for the Jaguars, Raiders, or Rams.

Bad point. Fantasy and gambling exist for baseball too. We need to stop saying "Something that is better in football is a reason why football is more popular" like it is some sort of amazing point.

No. The ratings for football are pretty great regardless of the time. You think people are having parties on Sunday at 10pm?

Who cares? You are a loser if you can name 3 players from every team in any league.

No, its a great point. It's THEE point. Gambling and more specifically the rise of fantasy football is the reason its as popular as it is.

I love when you drop the one word NO like you're the authority. :D

85% of games are played on Sunday afternoon. That you deny the party/group aspect is ridiculous. No one who is honestly looking at why the NFL is popular would dismiss that.

I disagree. I think it just means you're a big fan.

Football has more fans. A large percentage (way larger than MLB or NBA fans) like the sport for reasons like "the social aspect", fantasy football, office pools, and gambling in general.

To pretend Fantasy and Gambling are not a HUGE part of the NFL's success is just being naive.

There are a number of ways that it has been shown this is false. For instance, the NFL draft gets huge ratings too. Preseason games get huge ratings. Fantasy football is over and the playoffs get massive ratings. The NFL was more popular before most of us were playing fantasy football too.

We can look at the ratings on Thursday/Sunday Night/Monday night to disprove this too. I doubt many people are going to football parties on three worknights.

A large percentage of MLB fans just like being outside in the summer or like hanging out with family and friends. See how easy it is to say things like that?

For some reason, football is chosen OVER baseball in huge numbers. You can't just say "People only like football because it is better at these 15 things" and then act like that is an argument in favor of baseball.

No there has not. You present things as proof but they are not legit.

People absolutely watch pre season and the draft with Fantasy football in mind, so not sure what the point is there.

Fantasy football in the playoffs is becoming more popular every year and gambling goes crazy during the playoffs

See none of those prove anything.

Well you would be wrong about that. Almost every bar has thursday night specials and thursday night is a defacto weekend night for young people anyway. Also many people treat sunday night like part of the weekend. (Not everyone is a 9-5er)

And I dont know why you think that because 10% of the games dont fall into the party category that somehow that proves the party aspect is completely meaningless.

You do this with this argument a lot.

Its like

Poster: Women like football for the parties

Rick: I know one woman that is a HUGE fan so that's false

That's not true though. Not close to the level with NFL. Its not a 1:1 comparison.

Probably 2 of 10 baseball fans would fall in that category while 5 or 6 football fans fall into my category

Boilermaker Rick wrote:

Its not 15 things.

Its 3 very specific things that no one could honestly deny

Gambling
Fantasy
Sunday celebration/Group aspect

None of those have anything to do with the actual sport. Sport to sport, baseball is better (imo)

Totally disagree with this. I rarely gamble and haven't played fantasy in 7 years and could still easily name several players on each team. I think many football fans can. I also think gambling and fantasy as related to the nfl are hugely overstated.

to me, the player movement in football is too much to keep track of .
not even considering injuries, where you then have 2nd/3rd stringers in there you might not know of, but player A gets cut. Then signs with another team the following week.
plus for someone who doesn't really follow college football (me) , you have this GIANT influx of rookies every year with the draft. In basketball, even though i may not know everyone, the player pool is smaller so its easier to become knowledgeable.

I get that. I'm certainly not going to pretend to know every starter on every team, but it's never been difficult to remember who at least the QB is for every team.

The notion that 5 out of 6 nfl fans are fans because of fantasy and/or gambling is just made up nonsense.

From what I have gathered from this board over the years. The NFL is only popular because of:
Fantasy Football
Gambling
Beer
Food
Friends
Family
Super Bowl Commercials
Office Pools
Discussing football with others
Violent hits
Short attention spans
On television
Looks good on television
Packaged well with fancy graphics
Short Season
Less games per week
Drink specials on Thursday nights
Drink specials on Sunday nights
Drink specials on Monday nights
The weather isn't as good so people stay home more.
Wings

So, if you ignore all those reasons that football is good, then you wouldn't have football be so popular.

Never? Without looking it up, can you tell me who the starting QBs are for the Rams, Raiders, Vikings, Jaguars, Dolphins, Browns?

You also said you could name "several" players on each NFL team. "Several" is at least 5 or 6 to me. You are a bigger fan of the league overall than I am, FF. Still though, I doubt you could name 'several' players from all 30 teams. I would guess there would be at least 5 or 6 you would struggle to name more than 2 from.

Football is the most popular sport. We all have different thories on everything that contributes to that fact.

Not a big deal

I think there are more casual fsns om the Nfl side. Which is fine if its true.

It'd be impossible for me to prove this over a message board. Feel free to quiz me next time we hang out though.

I would think most football fans wouldn't have trouble knowing Ryan Tannehill, and also knowing Brian Hoyer is in front of Manziel. It doesn't take being Furious to know who Derek Carr is. Chad Henne isn't new to Jax. Some might not know who Austin Davis is but many do as plenty of jokes have been made about him already. I figured everyone here knew who Cassell and Bridgewater are.

Well, you've got to at least admit this much: if Football wasn't inherently way more entertaining than baseball, baseball would be much more popular.

This is pretty much the only argument that needs to be made. Everyone here always argues "if football didn't have all these damn appealing aspects to it, it wouldn't be popular."

It's a classic case of not really being able to defend your position (sport) so you make up things as to why it's not a "pure" popularity.

It's way more popular. Period.

Just like JORR, you just flat out refuse to even consider any counterpoint and then you complain about my posting style once again.

I guess it isn't just baseball that I should avoid discussing with you.

Wow. Ok dude. Your choice.

I guess criticizing what i find to be faulty "proof" is not allowed here.
No. It had to do with you once again doing a critique of my posting style. I did you the favor in giving you a quick response to avoid it.

You did me no favor

You sometimes use what I consider to be faulty logic and you also sometimes treat opinions as facts and hypotheses as proven theories . I'm not gonna lie to you, sorry I'm gonna give my honest opinion

Another poster recently critiqued your arguing stye and made some solid points, imo

If ceasing to discuss things with me is your wish, nothing is stopping you.
