From what I have gathered from this board over the years. The NFL is only popular because of:
Fantasy Football
Gambling
Beer
Food
Friends
Family
Super Bowl Commercials
Office Pools
Discussing football with others
Violent hits
Short attention spans
On television
Looks good on television
Packaged well with fancy graphics
Short Season
Less games per week
Drink specials on Thursday nights
Drink specials on Sunday nights
Drink specials on Monday nights
The weather isn't as good so people stay home more.
Wings

So, if you ignore all those reasons that football is good, then you wouldn't have football be so popular.

This is pretty much the only argument that needs to be made. Everyone here always argues "if football didn't have all these damn appealing aspects to it, it wouldn't be popular."

It's a classic case of not really being able to defend your position (sport) so you make up things as to why it's not a "pure" popularity.

It's way more popular. Period.

I disagree. I'm not even arguing the popularity

But that list is bogus. Gambling and fantasy have a huge impact on football. Moreso than any other sport. The rest of the list is just 20 different ways of saying the social aspect

Im not sure why gambling and fantasy being a big part of the popularity bothers people

The NFL is GREAT at drawing in casual fans. Nothing to be ashamed of

I think the Oct of fanatics to casual fans is different in each sport

I'd say NBA and NHL fans are ahead of baseball in that respect but who cares anyway

I'm guilty of a lot of things but not what I accuse you of here. I don't say things are proven false when the evidence is inconclusive. I don't say "No" to peoples opinions kike its a matter of fact.

I'll ask you then. If you say something is proven or state something as fact that i think is debateable, how should I address it?

Should I just say "No you're wrong" with no explanation?

Don't make me defend Rick here. I agree that he is a bad person with bad thoughts. But he is right here.

Respond to the posts and not your opinion of my posting style. See, even this is ending up to be a completely pointless discussion.

And you saying its false is kinda ridiculous

Maybe its not as pronounced as I say it is. But when you say something that is pretty much perpetually debatable is "proven false" you come off as close minded and dismissive

Fantasy football and gambling play a large role in the popularity of the NFL

Nope.

But are you saying that that somehow makes it "less popular"?

I will say, however, that if gambling and fantasy were eliminated, football would still be more popular.

You didn't say it plays a significant role. Of course it plays a significant role. Football is the most popular sport in America for hundreds of reasons.

You are saying it is the reason why it is so popular. If you aren't, then I misunderstood your previous quotes.

The fantasy football angle is easy to prove false by simply pointing out the playoff numbers and the NFL draft numbers. Fantasy football has a minimal impact on both of those. The gambling one is a little bit harder since you can gamble on most things.

It's not personal. It's just something you do and it is a lazy way to argue.

It would be like if I was saying that you are only responding this way because you like JORR. It doesn't actually say anything of importance. So you think I have a bad pattern with my posting habits. Big deal.

Never? Without looking it up, can you tell me who the starting QBs are for the Rams, Raiders, Vikings, Jaguars, Dolphins, Browns?

even in the 80's and 90's i doubt you could find anyone who could name all starting QB's, and that's when you had a lot of future HOF's and great quarterbacks. but sometimes you have nerds like me who could tell you that stan humphries was the starting qb for the san diego chargers in 1992 (saw a lot of their games being in the kansas city market), and watched enough espn primetime to know that ken o'brien started a bunch of games for the jets that year too.

this is off the top of my head, not looking it up...all the starting qb's in the nfl:

afc north

bal - joe flacco
pit - big ben
cin - andrew dalton
cle - the great brian hoyer

afc south

ind - andrew luck
ten - jake "the hurt" locker
hou - ryan fitzpatrick
jax - chad henne

afc east

ne - tom brady
nyj - geno smith
buf - e.j. manuel
mia - ryan tannehill

afc west

san diego - philip rivers
oakland - derrek carr
kansas city - alex smith
denver - peyton manning

nfc north

chicago - jay cutler
green bay - aaron rodgers
detroit - matt stafford
min - lol (ok, matt cassell)

nfc south

no - breesus
tb - josh mccown
car - cam newton
atl - matt ryan

nfc east

phi - nick foles
dallas - tony romo
nyg - eli manning
was - kirk cousins/griffin dunne

nfc west

sea - russell wilson
sf - colin kaepernick
stl - shaun hill
ari - carson palmer/drew stanton

whew...and i haven't played FF in over 4 years.

How did the NFL taker over?

Seems like it was a gradual climb past baseball in the seventies and 80s

I wonder what were the different causes. I'd guess the availability of games on tv and things like ESPN helped

If so, wasn't it more entertaining in the 60s too when baseball was king?

You might be right. Could be a couple generations of baseball die hards had to die first.

Is it really though? There is about the same amount of action in a game. Is it about the violence or the anticipation/ # of exciting plays that could happen that make football more entertaining?

Both. Neither. Not really sure honestly. I don't think it's the violence(for me). I love basketball which is a soft as hell league and don't care much for hockey.

It probably has a lot to do with attention span these days. Who knows?

The 85 Bears played a role in it. They were a team of rock stars and that was the year the NFL took over iirc
