Even if you really don't want to you have to follow through. They won't believe you are serious if you don't.

No one is allowed to watch TV or play with a tablet during the school week in my house. They aren't allowed to do it on the weekend until all work is done. I've had this rule since they were in daycare and I've stuck to it so no one tries to challenge me about it.

I got my ass beat on a regular basis when I was a kid.

It never did anything for me but make me afraid, and later, angry. It also taught me to conceal my thoughts, feelings and behavior from my elders.

I'll never spank either of my boys.

My dad & I had an enlightening conversation when I was maybe 8-9 years old (and had just gotten ratted out by my sister for stealing a pack of football cards). He mentioned that when he was my age he did something similar, got caught & his (Alabama raised, go figure ) dad whipped his ass, leading to a fall that knocked out two teeth.

He explained how he didn't want to go that route, but that I was finally getting big enough to take one...and who knew what the consequences could/would be.

That fear stuck with me, until the living off campus with no cash hunger became a bit much

I've never had an issue with parents who spank their kids. Obviously beating them is not right. I can't recall ever hitting my kids, but I probably did a time or two. I can distinctly recall getting in their faces with them pinned up against the wall for repeatedly failing to listen to me. I had to put the fear of God into them at least once, so they knew who was in charge. Maybe that's wrong. However, I see so many parents with children who just ignore them at every command. You see this misbehavior in public places, and the kids clearly do not respect the parents. Part of it is a safety issue, such as telling your kids to be home at a certain time or looking both ways when crossing the street. Oh well, no easy answers.
