Wow, does Olbermann take the blade to the Captain.

I'm posting this more because farewell tours have become so over the the top. They're athletes. They're not dying. And they're not curing cancer.

He should have stopped at Ruth, Gehrig, DiMaggio, and Mantle. Jeter is most certainly greater than Nettles, Munson, Randolph, Mussina, Ruffing, and that scumbag A-Rod.

I was kind of ambivalent about this because I'm also sick of the farewell tour and am friends with some annoying Yankees fans, but Olbermann's rant also feels Bernstein-ish in the lengths he goes to tear down imaginary arguments. And "Gehrig took himself out of the lineup when he got sick" is an absurd thing to say to denigrate Jeter's leadership because Gehrig, you know, got sick.

Great point. He's in such a hurry to bring out his sabermatrician stats that show he's right.

The more I think about it, I stand by the Shoutout but I also think he could be DB'd for the same clip.

What a conundrum.

Maybe the athlete himself should step up and say I don't want any of this shit .Do something for the last home stand only.

You just described everything that Keith Olbermann has done in his life.

That would be awesome.

Mattingly would have done that

I happened to turn on ESPN right as Jeter was coming to bat with two outs in the 9th in a one run game with runners on the basepaths. The crowd was cheering like they were about to witness the great hero making another big hit. He proceeded to look clueless out there and the Yankees lost. I wondered if the hypothetical Yankees would be in the playoffs without Jeter based on just how bad he looks.

Olbermann's a Yankee guy who understands the history of the team and loves the old guys going off on a comment made by Posada claiming Jeter is the greatest Yankee ever.
Was it over the top? Absolutely. Did I enjoy it? Absolutely.

I'm curious as to what the board's Yankee Guy thinks of it (cue StoneRoses...)

Isn't Konerko getting the same treatment?

He could have by not saying "this will be my last season." Play the season, then retire in the offseason.

Yes, but in the dimestore manner appropriate for that other dark-pinstriped team.

Mike Mussina being that high on the list sounds weird at first, but when you think about it, all he ever did for the Yankees was pitch really well just about every day and never be a liability, which you can't say for Past A Diving Jeter.

That's how he framed it.
You mean someone on tv may have taken something out of context to create a strawman argument?

Panther already beat you to that punch. You're the Paul Konerko of the CSFMB retiring class of 2015.

If truth be told, Jeter says, he'd like his farewell to be just as understated as Konerko, a man who he admires and respects. From an article by Bob Nightingale 09/18

I'm not a fan of Jeter or the Yankees but I fail to see what's really so wrong about the farewell tour. Sure it's a bit over the top but I don't see that as a reason to run down the career of a sure-fire HoF'er. Is he just upset that no one gave the Babe a farewell kayak?
