Malcolm in the Middle was an abomination. Caller Bob mom (possible Mt Rushmore for worst tv character), annoying kids, and dumbass dad. It's what caused me to despise Cranston until I started getting into Breaking Bad.

That 70s Show had too many annoying characters for me. Every joke was a snarky quip.

Even Seinfeld, which is a GOAT, labored in the early seasons.

Any person who creates, works for, or watches a sitcom televised on CBS, NBC, ABC, or Fox should be smothered with a pillow in their sleep and atomized into nothingness so that their stupidity cannot infect the populace.
This post is so much better if you pretend there is a laugh track after every paragraph.

I realized a couple years ago I'm done with sitcoms. The only one I've even half-watched in the past decade is The Office.

I just assume that I hate people that try to be funny.

I laugh more at Mad Men or Justified than any sitcom.

let me clarify...i understand it takes time for a show to find its groove, especially with a sitcom. it's very rare that a sitcom or comedy show can just take off right off the bat ("it's always sunny" is one of those rare exceptions, and their pilot episode remains one of their best written episodes of all time). however, there are seedlings or there is a germ of an idea that shows promise that can tip you off sometimes whether it has a chance of being good.

i'm talking simply from the writing point of view. i know everybody's got their own sense of humor and what they find funny. i'm talking about competently writing a joke. i see a huge problem in it in comedy shows lately. it's almost as if these writers are learning the art of formula, not the art of comedy. obviously sitcoms are rife with predictability. all writing in some way is formulaic and predictable. a lot of the times, that's why it works.

i think "Becker" is one of the lamest sitcoms in the last 20 years. but it lasted a long time on the air. and it is mainly because, as unfunny as i found it, it was grounded in its formula and still had comic timing. i don't see that in shows like "black-ish", or that lousy chelsea handler show or "the b", or the awful "michael j. fox show". these guys don't get it. they flat out don't understand comedy. they're not competently writing humor. it's humor-ish, i guess.

More bad thoughts.

John Lithgow was incredible on this show, and his numerous Emmy's are proof of its greatness. The rest of the cast was also SOLID.

Are all the Grammy awards Michael Bolton won proof of his greatness?

Isn't that the truth? Hazardous Youth bass player Chris Splatter wrote a song about a friend of ours named Billy Jenney who had just done a stretch at Cook County Jail for stealing a car. Splatter brought the song in and showed the chords to Timmy Matlock and me. Then he handed me a lyrics sheet.

Not having listened to the song yet, I still know the song's title is better than the lyrics. One day we have to drink together Joe.

God I forgot all about Becker. I dont know a single person that ever watched it consistently. I feel like it was on the air for a decade too...

The Becker thing has got me rolling now. Suddenly Susan, Caroline in the City, Dharma and Greg, that terrible Kirstie Alley fashion one... god sitcoms have always been bad. The good ones are the exception. In fact were all these on NBC?  Maybe Becker was on CBS, that seems like such a CBS show.

I'm always skeptical when anyone plays the "everything that is being made now sucks" argument. It's not like all the talented people died or something. I just think a lot of sitcoms get looked upon more fondly as time goes on. There were lots of complaints about The Office and 30 Rock always seemed on the brink of cancellation even though I always liked it.

The interesting thing is that FX seems to be the only one that can provide even a decently accepted comedy now. Even HBO has failed pretty miserably at any attempt. Netflix had to bring back Arrested Development from the dead to even make a comedy show worth watching.

It may just be that tastes have changed and funny sitcoms don't really work so well any more. Even It's Always Sunny, which is probably the active gold standard of comedy, has some pretty bad episodes surrounded by great ones. Louie isn't even a comedy any more. I didn't laugh once. I enjoy The League, but it is forgettable too.

I hate The League and Big Bang Theory. The fact that people enjoy either boggles my mind. And I'm a nerd that likes fantasy football. Both shows should be in my wheelhouse but I cant watch more than 5 minutes of either.

That's how people view everything. They glorify it in their mind as time passes. That's why all old people almost always say "bla bla bla was so much better back in my day."

This thread has totally sent me down memory lane. I just went thru and looked at 90s sitcom list. It was jaw droppingly bad.

I blame expansion of chanels

Just like pro sports. More channels, the talent gets spread thinner and you get a worse product

Back when there was three channels and like 5 sitcoms on each, you had the best 200 writers in the world writing all the shows.

Now its in the thousands

Key and Peele are funny

They have their moments. More misses than hits IMO. The worst Chappelle Show skit is better than the best Key and Peele.

I'm not typically one to have strong feelings on these types of things, but I find them to be terrible. They over-act. The other comics I feel this way about are Carlos Mencia (and pretty much any Latin comic), Larry the Cable Guy, and any female comic. Small list.

Whoa, that's some pretty terrible company you're putting them in.

I loved the Gym teacher skit that one of them did on MadTV and the above skit.

That's about it. I just assumed the rest was as good

You ever see the Coach Hines skits?

Seen many of theier bits because people and sites promote them, I guess i just missed the funny ones.

I blame Dane Cook for all of the bad comedy. He told stories to college freshman, they thought it was funny and downloaded the hell out of it from I tunes, so now if you get some 19 year old kids to make you popular by a good download number, some genius wants to turn you into a TV show, even without hearing what you do.

I dont think Dane Cook is as bad as everyone says.

He's not a great stand up, but he found a little niche. Some of the stories were funny.

I get how annoying he can be
