We're not scraping by but that's because we are in Peoria. Good with the bad, I guess.

Judging someone's salary based on $100K is pointless. I don't understand why people say "six figures" like that's a ton of money. In Kansas, that is quite a bit of money. On the East coast, the West coast, or Chicago area, that's not that much money.

$1200 month for Rogue jr's day care. Even next year when he starts kindergarten we are going to have to pay for 1/2 day care because its not all day kindergarten. I don't know how people pay for day care with multiple kids. Its crazy expensive just with one.

Thats the same problem we had. We had to move out to the middle of nowhere to afford a house. 2007 happened. My wife couldn't find a job in her field without having to commute downtown and make less a month than the cost of daycare, so she stayed home.

These stories are one of the few reasons I don't mind living out here in the country. I do not make 100K but I have a nice house (built in 2009, 4 bedroom) and my mortgage with taxes hovers around 1000 dollars a month. COL out here is so dirt cheap that I can still put something away each month. My wife does not work because it would cost more for daycare than what she would have made as a newspaper reporter (and the hours suck), plus quite honestly, we do not need her to work. She's thinking of picking up a part-time job next year when our youngest goes to kindergarten.

On the downside, I live in the middle of nowhere - where exotic places like "Hershey" and "Reading" are the big cities.

A slightly different way to word this. I see the cost of expenses and wonder how families get by without making more than $100k combined.

- If you want a decent 3-4 bedroom home and have the average of 2 kids, you are looking at a monthly mortgage payment, with taxes and insurance, at around $2,500.
- Food is the second biggest expense, and unless you eat the minimum, its going to average about $800 when you factor in kids.
- If both parents work and commute from 10-25 miles, you are looking at $80 a week in gas across two mid-sized cars, worse with SUVs. Insurance will run you $150 a month. If you have car payments, you may add $500-$600 a month. Maintenance runs you about $50 a month when you average it out. You are looking at $500-$1000 in car-related expenses.
- Utility bills depend on usage, but you are looking at gas to be about $100, electric to be about $100, TV and internet to be around $150, home phone to be $50 and cell phone to be $150. You are looking at utilities to be around $550.
- Health insurance depends heavily on who you work for, but you are probably looking at $800 for health and dental for a family.

So for those mostly mandatory expenses, a family is looking at ~$6,000. A $100k income, after 20% taken out for taxes, breaks down to $80,000, which divided over a 52-week period comes out to... $6,000 a month.

Now... God forbid you need to pay into day care, you are looking at another $300-$1,500 a month. Or worse, you have to pay for school? And what if the kids want to play sports? You need to clothe yourself. House maintenance? I can easily see a family having to tack on an additional $2000-$3000 in personal expenses. I assume you have to turn to credit cards at that point?

yep

The truth is, kids are outrageously expensive if you live in the city. In some ways, Rick is correct about the superiority of the suburbs.

I think that's the point where some moms (or dads) stay home because day care costs more than they make in their jobs

I have known parents that do that, especially if you have multiple children in daycare.

I left the house on Saturday morning around 9:30am and by the time I got back at Noon, I'd already spent 180 bucks on crap. $50 for kid's haircuts, $60 for the kid's sports fees, $20 for McDonalds, $50 to fill up the wife's SUV.

I have to quit leaving the house.

I have worked with two different teachers who left their jobs due to having multiple kids in the daycare age range. It was almost a net loss on top of the wear and tear on the cars since both drove kinda far to work.

Why do you people pay so little for haircuts? My haircut is $25 and $15 for my son. When I add in another $100 every 2 to 3 weeks for my girls I am really being raped.

Day care + gas + dry cleaning + extra meals out (because of no time to cook) + (at least some people) yard and house cleaning help.

That's why my wife went to part time when we had kids. Worked opposite shifts from me close to home (still does). She bikes or walks on nice days. No regrets.

We thought about the opposite shif route to save on day care ( would've meant me working nights ) but decided it would probably cause more headaches than it would solve. Therefore we nut up and pay the daycare expense.
