With Sandberg, it was the belief that major-league base coaching is more valuable than minor-league managing (despite the fact that the Cubs virtually fielded a minor-league team those years), as well as the belief that anything in Glorious Boston is more valuable than any work anywhere else.

I believe I had a typically brick-wall argument with SHARK over this, who just kept saying "One thing is certain. Sandberg has never coached in the major leagues" as if that was supposed to end all discussion. Then Robin Ventura got the Sox job because Jerry likes him. lol

The Guillen show will play anywhere as long as you're winning. But it only plays in Chicago when you're losing and then, not forever. He won a World Series here. He had the longest leash in the world and he still wore out his welcome.

Anyway, he's a guy you can use to come in and shake up a moribund team, but he definitely has a shelf life. I would compare him to Billy Martin. He's good for the turn around, less so for the long run. And he's another guy with a lot of antiquated ideas about how to approach the game.

Ozzie has managed for the last time in MLB.

No. He probably hasn't even managed for the last time in Chicago.

This, combined with the fact that we are living in a time of increased political correctness, makes it hard to believe that anyone will want to take another chance with him.

call it "politicial correctness" call it what you will, but isn't condemning a guy for thinking fidel castro is a badass a little bit thoughtcrimey to you? or is it just me?

Disagree.

He looks better than he ever has...whatever he decides to say about Venezuelan and Cuban politicians pales in comparison to dudes knocking their fiances unconscious, dudes beating their children with switches, and dudes with multiple legal issues due to illicit drug usage.

edit: We live in a society that romanticizes Che Guevara still. Positive comments about Fidel Castro are far more acceptable.

right on, futon! see we all know that ozzie loves the american system that has made him a milliionaire (and he got, what, 20-30mil in that last deal from the marlins for managing one single year?) this is the same guy who has said to the media before "fuck all y'all i got a yacht. in fact i'm going to go enjoy that in europe OK BYE!!!!!" so like, i really dont think a guy doing that well truly and fundamentally hates the country/system that got him to that position in life.

he just happens to think fidel castro is a bit of a badass motherfucker, which hey, maybe you can still argue that on college campuses maybe not but dont do it on twitter. and since he is a SYMBOL OF ALL THAT IS AGAINST AMERICA, yeah, ozzie's one wayward thought makes us have to scold him and reprogram becuase YOU JUST DON'T SAY THAT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

yeah i'm sure ozzie is on the frontlines of a cultural war to reshape america in his glorious vision. from his fucking yacht sailing around europe no less.

thoughtcrime pure and simple, but like that george carlin routine on words and how something simple like "shell shock" became all artificial like "post traumatic stress disorder", well, "thoughtcrime" has been gentrified into "political correctness"

If you have any doubts Ozzie will manage again watch some of the 2005 postseason. He was masterful, that roster wasn't even worthy of the playoffs and Ozzie had them steamrolling everyone in sight.

Ridiculous. They were easily the best team in baseball the entire fucking year.

That was only one instance.

It was running a foul mouth for attention like some grade school kid.

But people forget how things that should have stayed in clubhouse ended up on Twitter and in the newspapers.

Players and management tend to remember that more than anything else.

Not as good in the second half

weren't the twins within like 1 game of catching them for the division lead before falling off with 2-3 games to go? i wanna say it was run down to as close as one game near the very end, but then hey they lost only one game in the playoffs and jerry got his WS game ball and all that near-collapse nonsense was quickly forgotten.

Coming into the season? They jettisoned Carlos Lee and Magglio Ordonez in favor of Scott Podsednik and Jermaine Dye. That roster, particularly the lineup, was more parts magic than it was good.

The pitching was fantastic though, and the bullpen was lights out.

Indians

But like the great team they were, the White Sox got it together and closed strong with like 7 straight wins or something

They were 55-26 in the first half and 44-37 in the second

I'll always remember mfing the fans on his way out the first time. Ozzie was never as beloved by fans as he was by JR

it was the indians then, touche.

i'll always remember seeing them on something like april 20th 2005 (cuz you know i'm always very festive on hitler's birthday) and watching them and literally blogging "this is the type of team that can go and win a world series" --- i can dig up the actual blog as proof if you want.

they sure as hell proved me right. even if i don't remember who they almost collapsed to in the last week or two. i now seem to remember mike north holding their feet to the fire re: that subject. does that happen in chicago sports talk anymore since the bernsteinization of the score?

I would say the bullpen had everything to do with Ozzie. He used them perfectly. He also didn't freak out everytime his starter gave up a baserunner after the 7th.

They didn't almost collapse. The Indians played about .700 baseball for the last two months.
