during lovie's era the focus was on having the best defense you could possibly have every year and then one year if you get a good enough offense (rex grossman and thomas jones = legendary duo!) boom you make the super bowl.

lovie wasn't gonna flip the switch from defense-based to offense-based cuz he had a "franchise quarterback" (it's up to you if you wanna remove the "s --- i leave them here to be neutral) but now trestman is here and the general idea is to load jay up with WR weapons and an o-line that can prevent him from inadvertently ending up playing games of "smear the queer" (and guess who's wearing the sweater with the "burrito" in his mouth? =) well then hey you'll still be that perennial 7-9 to 9-7 team with the occasional blip year in either direction and if you get a defense that does good enough and hey you got a shot at a superbowl within a ~5-10 year window.

so now we've got the anti-2000s-bears out there on the field, and the downside is that if your offense can only keep up with a suddenly-rejuvenated/this-is-what-we-expected-from-game-1 packers lot for 1/2 of football, welp, 38-17 happens. would you rather have this or would you rather have a grindy 23-14 loss to the packers?

i'll take my chances with the offense. thats what the bears decided for better or worse.

Whatever strides the defense took in NY and SF were completely wiped out yesterday. Like FF said, despite the design of the offense and the ambition of the coach, it appears Cutler cannot win a shootout. Now that doesn't render the Bears impotent, but it does mean you cannot overcome a flirting with last place defense.

Don't project a single game onto a season...and they stopped the run. Stop the run as they have the last three weeks and most QBs will not beat the Bears.
The Bears face 7 top 10 QB's in the last 12 games.

Poppycock. The Bears rank 20th in the NFL against the rush and the pass.

They haven't stopped either facet of opposing offenses particularly well.

Skewed by a horrible effort in week 1

So we just throw that out?

No, but in a sample size of 4, with 3 being good efforts and 1 being horrible, average should be considered unreliable

Yes! Did Lacy have 30 yards? I believe Cutler had more yards on the ground.

Lacy had 48 yards, not good at all, but to say the defense played good when you were shredded on the back end is just kind of funny to me.

Our defense couldn't stop the best quarterback in the NFL being assisted by the refs. I won't lose any sleep over that. They've been solid most of the season.

It's better to know where we are then keep on pretending like they are a team that is any threat to do anything.

The Bears have been in a terrible cycle of not being bad enough to rebuild but not being good enough to compete for titles.

The Bears secondary will continue to be a huge problem for them.

I'm more concerned about the pass rush. Deione Sanders couldn't cover a receiver for 7 seconds.

That's not accurate. The Bears gave up 4.8 yards/carry in game 1, 4.7 yards/carry in game 2, and 4.4 yards/carry in game 3. All of those numbers are below average for the NFL this year. Against the Packers, the Bears had an evidently stellar effort against the rush, yielding only 3.1 yards/carry. But this stat is obviously misleading since the Packers found the path of least resistance in the Bears porous passing defense.
