Sooo many shortstops who arent shortstops

hey didn't we just spend a whole season collectively blowing a legendary yankee shortstop who isn't technically a shortstop?

He was at one time though.

I dont care. If they hit like 3b and Corner OF, then the cubs can find a slick fielding SS to bat 8th

Russell won't hit like a 3B. I could see Castro forsaking some average for power and being a 20HR which would be acceptable at 3B.

With all the power and K's really what they need at third is Gillespie. Not kidding.

I think the Cubs will give Alcantara and Baez another chance next season, so you have to plug them into the lineup. Which means the Cubs can't go get a free agent and tell them to sit on the bench. If either one of them continues to suck, then yes, the Cubs would trade them or sign someone to replace them. IMO, that won't happen this offseason.

I think you could trade Coghlan

Also, injuries usually work that kind of stuff out anyway.

Id hate to "hold spots" for 4 young unproven guys (Bryant, Aclantara, Russell, Baez) at once

4 good outfielders is a problem Id be ok with

I know you're just saying what you think they will do

I'm the original Gillaspie ALS. I don't think anyone NEEDS him. He is a platoon player to play against RHP.

Ok but a #2 hitter would be good for Cubs. That said I am out of Cub's biz.

They proved they could compete over a season? News to me.

So is he finally setting a well defined goal by which he should be judged? It seems like he is kind of ambiguous where simply competing in the NL Central next year means that he has done a good job. That is really more Theo's style than tying himself down to something as bright line as a Central title, especially in a year will he will be asking for an extension.

Rosenbloom's take:

: Theo Epstein

From: Mr. Cranky Pants

Boychick,

For all your transparency since ducking out of that Starbucks four offseasons ago, something you said Tuesday ticked me off. This:

“We’ve finished in last place. We have for the last three years and that is unacceptable.’’

Hey, yo, whoa, no. Theo, bubala, you designed the Cubs to do exactly that. You created rosters that virtually guaranteed it. You hired inexperienced managers to leverage your last-place bet.

Wear it. Own it. Embrace it. Because it’s working.

Finishing at the bottom of the division -- near the bottom of the majors, period – gave the Cubs high drafts picks that helped restock the farm system with quality prospects.

Your razed-Cub policy dictated clearing out the detritus of bad players and bad contracts. It also dictated that you sign players you could flip at midseason to continue to restock the system. Done and done.

And here you go with Javier Baez, Jorge Soler and Kyle Hendricks, with Kris Bryant, Addison Russell and Albert Almora to follow. Just like big-boy organizations such as the one in Missouri that always pantses you.

Speaking of scouting and development monsters, Theo, here’s another thing I’m cranky about: The Bryant plan.

He might not start the season on the big-league team? Seriously? Bryant is the best prospect in baseball but the worst team in the NL Central can’t use him on opening day?

Look, when you talk about competing for the division title in 2015, you’re full of it if Bryant is held back for financial reasons. I mean, you’re the one who said every season is sacred, or is that true only when it’s financially convenient?

You’ve done a nice job. The plan is working like you said it would. Talented players are coming up. So is the excitement. So is your willingness to pursue top free-agent pitchers and stamp a use-by date on the product to contend for the division next year. All good. There’s your credibility.

So, stop with the blather about last place being unacceptable. That dings your credibility. Last place is unacceptable now, but before, it wasn’t just acceptable, it was your preferred destination. Stop playing Cubs fans for stupid. You’re stealing Tom Ricketts’ act.

XOXO

I think if I worked on my prose I could shit out a column for the Trib or Sun Times that'd be more interesting than this shit.

"Now, Theo. Thee-o. Theoer. Theee-eee-oh. You said something a little bit, how do I put this, disingenuous. Allow me to write a column effectively praising everything you've done; but scolding you for one innocuous comment assuredly taken out of context. Im a big boy writer in the 3rd largest market the USA, this is the best I can do."

Yeah,I was disappointed in his point of view. He is like the simpleton version of Jay Mariotti. I think about 10 years ago,he was a witty guy. Now he exists on fumes.
