Theo saying they showed they could compete within the division is referencing them playing .500ish baseball over the last 4 months.

Dan even said that with the Cardinals, Pirates, Reds, and Brewers all being competitive within the division themselves, the Cubs' window could easily come and go without them ever making the playoffs, and that's just fine, because at least they did it their way. Get the fuck out of here.

This is the problem. It presupposes that, but for the losing season, multiple titles could not have been won. My position is that, with the upgrades in scouting and (eventually) revenue, those multiple titles were still available without the intentional losing.

The only thing that weakens my argument is if Bryant is the World Series MVP because he really is the only piece the Cubs couldn't have obtained should they won...and even he would have been replaced with someone who should be pretty good if you trust your scouting.
