Calling out Phil Emery for his failures on defense and on the Cutler extension. About fricking time. He is the problem and has to go. The guy is a like an annoying self-righteous uncle that you can't stand.

Usually Boers talks about Morrisey's articles and I'm hoping he devotes some time today to this one, because it's right on. Thank God Morrisey thinks that losing matters.

In defense of Tucker, he had a good game plan against SF. Then he tried to do what Detroit did against Rodgers, dropping 7 back and rushing 4, but it didn't work because the front four could put no pressure on Rodgers. But at least his strategy was logical in trying to follow something that worked against Rodgers. He can only play the cards he's been dealt.
The problem with defending Tucker is that he has a long track record of failure. At least Dom Capers defenders can point to a period of success in recent memory.

blow me, morrissey. mel tucker needs to go cuz the guy is unmitigated shit at calling a defensive game, coaching up players, etc. he inherited a good jaguars defense and turned it to shit. he inherited a really-way-more-old-than-we-thought bears DEF and promptly watched it turn to shit, and now we're gonna run phil emery out of town because he was busy fixing the offense and getting a line that will give you and the offense a chance.

When has firing a coordinator worked for the Bears?? Firing Ron Turner was supposed to be the answer to the offense. Didn't work. Neither did firing Martz and Tice. Not even firing head coaches in Jauron, Wannsted and Smith has worked. You need the players to be good more than the coaches to be good. And the guy responsible for that is Uncle Phil, and to a lesser extent Trestman. It starts with the GM, and the Bears ownership is to blame for not getting that right going back to Bill Tobin.

btw this whole thread hearkens the question: WHAT THE FUCK DO YOU GUYS EXPECT OUT OF THE BEARS?!?!?!?!

hasn't dan bernstein programmed 75% of you to know that today's parity-laden NFL is DESIGNED to make sure that you're not good/bad for extended periods of time, and teams like the patriots are the exception and not the rule? you're pretty much supposed to end up right between 7-9 and 9-7 every year with occasional blip years that waver in either direction, and if you get lucky you get a super bowl via one of those wacky random "any given sunday" type of years.

so the bears have basically flipped around their recently-historical (~10yrs) view and made the offense the bellcow of the franchise, and basically they figure as long as they keep jay upright and on the field and surrounded with WR weapons and a decent-or-better RB they're going to be somewhere around 7-9 to 9-7 every year even if their defense is utter [non-sequitur] bad.

and that's what they look to be this year, except the pessimistic amongst us think that whole "7 of the top 10 quarterbacks in the last 12 weeks" thing is going to spell doom, aka some 6-10 type blip year in the other direction.... regression.

alls i'm saying is after what you saw on monday are the patriots unbeatable? the bears offense put in nearly 1/2 of what was needed to beat the packers 41-38 last week (inches away from going to the half up 24-21), and if isn't clear to you that this organization has decided to go the route of having its offense ultimately decide its fate..... welp. i suppose there's more burnable phil emery effegies to sell.

Your logic is fallacious. Thinking that quitting heroin relates to firing a coach is a non sequitur.

And you're missing the point anyway. It was it's more important to get the GM right who picks the players than replacing coaches.

Emery is not going to just accept he drafted bad players, look for mel Tucker to be cut loose in the next 4 games if this defense continues to be amazingly bad.

The Bears traditionally move at a glacial pace. That is why guys like Martz, Shoop and Tucker have jobs for more than 1 year. It is also why Emery gets at least one more head coaching hire

100% agree, but few times in our lives, have we seen the Bears with an offense like this...and a defense this bad....especially after all the money they dumped into the defense.

I don't think anyone expects greatness, but you just let a team do whatever they wanted. Never once stopped them. If the field was 1000 yards long, not sure we get the ball back in the 2nd half!!!!!!!

The questions are "what have you done before me lately" and are the Bears closer to a Superbowl after what Emery has most recently done? What Emery has most recently done is draft a pretty good though still-too-early-to-tell-corner and two defensive lineman that are at best projects. On top of that, you have his free agency moves with the D-line. Dan always says you should pay a player for what they the are going to do, not what they have done. Didn't Emery and Bears fall into the trap of overpaying for Allen, who is arguably past his prime? How is he going to be beat good defensive tackles now? Have you watched him? He usually gets caught making a move and then gets stuck with a bull rush against a tackle that outweights him by 40 lbs. and probably out benchpresses him by 75 lbs. You need speed at the end position and he just doesn't seem to have it anymore, no matter how much you like the guy. The Jamaar Houston signing has been a similar dud for whatever the reason. You can write it off to bad luck, or maybe he just wasn't that good to begin with, which goes back to scouting people right. On the whole, nothing Emery has done defensively in the last year puts you closer to a Superbowl, not when you're averaging comparable yards against and points against versus last year.

I'm sorry - you're looking at a C- or D+ at best for Emery when we need an A or Ace.

Changing the name back to the Washington Braves isn't the dumbest idea I've ever heard, particularly considering it does lend itself to a real-world solution rather than just talking about it as though it would/will happen in a vacuum. It doesn't fix it, but it's something ... and opponents could at least wait a bit and use it as reason and impetus to continue moving forward by citing previous steps (changing back to Braves).
