But I don't doubt that there would be no trouble with acceptance. There's still a culture of masculinity and misogyny in hockey as in any sport, but what hockey does lack is the culture of religion that you see in baseball and football, and without that religious presence, there's not the specific homophobia that attends that religious presence. Consider the game's roots in a publicly secular part of the continent: Minnesota, New England, and Canada don't exactly come to mind when you think about the modern Christian theocracy that ruins American lives today. There are outspoken Christians in the game (Stu Grimson, of all people, is a born-again), but that still takes a backseat to pluralism. It's not unthinkable at all that hockey players would have no trouble with a gay teammate, since there have not only been gay players in the NHL, but in all likelihood very good ones.

I believe Josh Ho-Sang is already Chinese, black, and Jewish. He's been acting out lately and teams (including ours) strayed away from him for nebulous "character issues." Maybe he's gay on top of everything else. At that point, why not?

I think you'll find that hockey fans lean pretty hard to the left, sometimes too far to the left. The Denver Post's Adrian Dater, whose name is an anagram for "A Retard and I," just got suspended for two weeks because he said an injurious and cowardly player made a "pussy play" against an Av, to which Twitter collectively freaked out at him. Yahoo Sports's Puck Daddy has basically become social justice with a side of hockey, even bitching that the Anaheim Ducks have a girls' rec team called the "Lady Ducks" instead of just "Ducks." I don't think tolerance is a problem among hockey fans at all.

man, earlier today after WYC @ the 530 update i heard dan and terry go back into ditka for his comments re: jerry angelo being GUTLESS and all that..... but i have no idea what jerry angelo said in order to elicit such a reaction from ditka, so i decided to go to google and seach on "mike ditka jerry angelo gutless" figuring that combination of words in teh search engine would return a story like "yeah mike ditka went out and called jerry angelo gutless when jerry angelo said [what i'm looking to find out]"

and well, instead of getting an answer straight away i got this...

You say that as if NIU isn't a real university. I would venture a guess that it is harder to get into Northern Illinois University than the University of Alabama. My guess is the criteria for the U of A is, "do you live in Alabama? Can you pay tuition?" If the standards at NIU were the same, EIU and WIU wouldn't exist.
