So what's their benefit in all of this? They're gonna charge a subscription like, say, Netflix or Hulu?

finally. i wish all tv networks would do this. they can't though, because they know most people won't buy their shitty channels without it being pre-packaged with something useful like it is now.

good for hbo though. ive been waiting for them to do this since netflix came online. netflix was quoted last year saying they are creating their own tv series because "we have to be HBO before HBO becomes Netflix".

Right now I think I get it from Comcast at like $17 a month. I'm thinking they will be charging somewhere in the range of $15-$20 per month. I would cancel it with comcast even if it meant shelling out a couple dollars extra. Screw comcast.

Good call. I've given my HBOGO login info to 4 different people.

My hope is that they will upgrade their content. They have as decent movie selection, but I think it could be a lot better. If they want to charge Netflix type rates, then they need that level of selection.

What? Isn't Netflix like $8/month?

The movies available on HBO GO are just what they are currently running on a month to month basis on the TV channel.

Yeap, just hoping that the stand alone option will broaden the entire offering. HBO GO is great. I use it in airports all the time.

i bet it will be $14/month. which is too much for my tastes, but as long as they let you cum and go like netflix does then its not a bad deal. just buy it for a few months out of the year

1) The Price You're Willing to Pay Is Almost Certainly Too Low. Every month, the cable companies tally up their tall piles of ~$80 monthly cable bills and send money to each of the networks in the bundle. These fees range from a few cents per-subscriber-per-month to a few dollars. HBO currently has 30 million premium subscribers. It gets a whopping $7 every month for each one. The easy arithmetic suggests that with 15 million subscribers paying $14, HBO could get the same revenue.

Ah, same revenue, but not the same profit. Weaned off big cable, HBO's costs would skyrocket. It would have to build its own streaming infrastructure. It would have to take over its own marketing. It would have to build a customer services team and a billing team. All of these costs are currently covered by the cable companies. But if you wanted to pay for HBO Go exclusively, you would have to pay more for the unbundled content plus these new costs.

HBO leans on cable, and cable leans on HBO. Just like Disneyland would lose money if it sold a la carte tickets to Splash Mountain for $20 without requiring $80 park admission, cable companies would lose money if HBO went for $20, alone, without basic cable package.

So what you've got is a mutually beneficial relationship between HBO and TV on the one hand ... and consumers who are screaming for HBO Go on the other hand. But as Tim Carmody put it perfectly: "HBO is never going to dynamite its multi-decade relationship with cable companies unless individual customers were willing to make a Godfather offer."*

My guess is $20-$25 a month. They'll attempt to sell the benefit of movies/documentaries and full catalog of TV Shows. The bitching will then commence.

likely. but remember, netflix is making their own content (house of cards and etc..) because they know HBO is going to become a "netflix type service". basically, they both are becoming direct competitors. so look for prices to be similar. i dont know if hbo can get away with charging twice as much as netflix.....

Comcast gave me HBO for free when I moved to the X1. I pay $110/month for 260+ Channel "Digital Premier" and 60 Mbps internet, with HD and DVR. 1 box. HBO is only premium channel included, but I don't care for the others and wouldn't consider paying for any of them.

CBS is going to begin offering a streaming option of many of their local affiliates (excluding most sports coverage :x ), for $6 a month. You will also get access to earlier seasons of their shows, and other CBS classics.

Showtime is also going to be opening up an online subscription only service in the upcoming months.

It seems like the dominoes will start to fall and many other networks will soon be jumping on this bandwagon. It's too bad that CBS completely blows.

add in some Good Times, and you could have yourself a Norman Lear streaming pay service

I've always thought Netflix or one of the streaming services should offer up shows that are cancelled after like 1 or 2 episodes. In most cases, these shows shot at least 13 episodes, and they will never be aired on TV. Surely they could make a few bucks back in royalties by offering them online.

The world needs to know what happens to the storyline on the Paul Reiser show, dammit!!

So, these prices are going to just add up to cable prices but with less content (most of it you wouldnt use anyway, but still)

HBO
ESPN
AMC

If they charge 15/month you're halfway to a cable bill
