You got me beat, DT.

If someone is sitting next to me on a plane with Ebola and a low-grade fever, I'm freaking the fuck out right now.

Just read that she had a 99.5 and the threshold for concern is 100.4.

I don't feel a 100% certain that they have this thing figured out to that degree of certainty.

Also, what about the people in Dallas and Cleveland that have cleaned the plane since then? Lock them up, too. Lock all these people up with 21 days of food and we'll check back later and see how it turned out for them. That's my plan.

  That's good. I might have to break that out of retirement. It depends on what Dan Bernstein has to say about it.

The only reason one 'freaks out' is because (a) the have definitive proof of impending doom, or (b) they don't know what to think but elect to think of the worst. We all do the latter, it's not that I'd condemn you for not being super-excited about the proposition. But, as I said, my understanding is if all she's presenting is a low-grade fever, you're not any more likely to catch it than you are to win the Powerball lottery, more of less.

That said, how would you know they have Ebola?

Never mind that; get to writing the talk with your kids immediately before we all die.

Quote:
Most people think of a "normal" body temperature as an oral temperature of 98.6 °F (37 °C). This is an average of normal body temperatures. Your temperature may actually be 1°F (0.6°C) or more above or below 98.6 °F (37 °C). Also, your normal body temperature changes by as much as 1°F (0.6°C) throughout the day, depending on how active you are and the time of day. Body temperature is very sensitive to hormone levels and may be higher or lower when a woman is ovulating or having her menstrual period.
The NHS says that a normal temperature is around 37C (98.6F), although it depends on:

The person
Their age
What they've been doing
The time of day
Which part of the body you take the temperature from

It is generally accepted that normal body temperature ranges between 36.1C (97.3 F) to 37.2C (99.6 F).

Wikipedia
Quote:
The body temperature of a healthy person varies during the day by about 0.5 °C (0.9 °F) with lower temperatures in the morning and higher temperatures in the late afternoon and evening, as the body's needs and activities change.[7] Other circumstances also affect the body's temperature. The core body temperature of an individual tends to have the lowest value in the second half of the sleep cycle; the lowest point, called the nadir, is one of the primary markers for circadian rhythms. The body temperature also changes when a person is hungry, sleepy, or cold.

So really, 99.5 isn't necessarily a fever depending on what is going on.

Dr. Ken: Hello children, I'm your father, Dr. Kenneth Noisewater.

Children: Yeah, we know. You told us that before you pushed us in here. Why have you shoved us into the Bird-Flu Bunker?

Dr. Ken: I've recently renamed it. There's something I need to talk to you about.

Children: Oh, shit.

Dr. Ken: There's been an outbreak of something that's potentially very dangerous.

Children: What does that have to do with Dan Bernstein?

Dr. Ken: Nothing.

Children: Nothing? Are you feeling alright? Do you have a fever?

Dr. Ken: WHAT! WHY! DO YOU SEE SOMETHING!?!?

Children: Calm the fuck down, Dr. Kenneth Noisewater.

Dr. Ken: Come on! I know we only have a few days left on Earth but can you watch your damn language even a little bit.

Children: What are you talking about?

Dr. Ken: Look. I'm going to give it to you straight. The Ebola virus is here in the US and it's probably going to kill everybody that isn't rich enough to have an Ebola Bunker with quarantine ability and a patio with a nice smoker.

Children: You really need to stop drinking so much...or drink more until it kills you. We wouldn't mind the clock to start ticking on our trust funds.

Dr. Ken: That would be mean if I didn't know that it meant so much to you.

Children: So, what do we do to get out of here?

Dr. Ken: We just wait...I've got some board games...we can talk....

Children: Ah, we're good with Ebola.

Dr. Ken: My friend, Don Tiny, says we're OK with a fever that's under 100.3 but as soon as it gets to 100.4, we'll have to kill that person to save ourselves.

Children: Can you go stand closer to the fireplace?

Dr. Ken: Why?

Children: We feel how important this is. Dan Bernstein is right. Maybe we should go get extra supplies and come right back.

Dr. Ken: Dan?...are you even listening?

Children: We're going to the island.

Dr. Ken: Stay away from airports!

Children: What's an airport? You mean the building in the back where our planes are?

Dr. Ken: Oh yeah. Maybe I've sheltered you guys too much.

Children: Later.

My husband comes home from Cleveland tomorrow. EEEEKKKK!!!

Planes and airports are nasty. People put their fingers in their mouth, eyes, nose whatever all the time. There is no way this person didn't give it to someone else on the plane or in the airport.

The thing is, your understanding comes from health officials and those same health officials seem to not have a complete handle on this thing (or they are terrible at communication)

Like this right here....this right here doesnt inspire confidence

It's the same hospital that initially sent Duncan home, even though he had a fever and had traveled from West Africa. By the time he returned to the hospital, his symptoms had worsened. He died while being treated by medical staff, including the two women who have contracted the disease.

My point is, Im starting to worry that we arent getting the total truth of the matter. If we are, then Im with you, nothing to worry about. Im just not sure we are.

I think if we weren't getting 99% of the truth, there would be a lot of cases/deaths already here and in Canada.

What is Frank Costanza less worried about: Ebola or the Detroit Tigers?

I think we are getting the total truth. All of the reports coming out has shown that the people caring for the dude from Liberia at the hospital are incompetent. It's not surprising that some of them are now coming down with the disease.

Although, if they WERE lying, putting it on the individuals and claiming they didnt follow protocol would be a way to get over.

My guess is they had no procedures in place, they made it up as they went along. It's not completely their fault but at the same time it is. Now they are covering their ass. The first guy should never have been allowed in the country.

So, where should my understanding come from? Twitter? TV talking heads?

Some half-assed, for-profit hospital dropped the ball and what's to show for it? The fella died (was almost certain to anyway) and two nurses who had direct physical contact with the patient himself are sick at present.

Not folks that were on the plane with him, not folks that used the water fountain after him, not folks that may have been around his sister's cousin's uncle's stepmother who sneezed, but just two unfortunate, caring broads just doing their job the best they could with what they had available (which, if anything, is a scathing indictment against for-profit, commodotized healthcare, but that's an entirely different conversation).

What do they get for their good deed? Ebola. Life's swell and all, but that almost certainly doesn't mean diddly shit to you, me, or the man in the moon as far as I can tell with respect to our likelihood to contract Ebola.

Do we know every single thing that's going on or every single scenario with requisite percentages listed by them as happening? No; we're not necessarily supposed to ... in many cases it'd be giving good scotch to drunken chimps for all the good it would do.

If there was something to worry about, they'd at the very least say "look, maybe don't travel around a great deal" or something like that. Our governmental overlords don't gain much from mass panic (unwarranted or warranted) and the deaths of swaths of taxpayers by keeping secrets ... or Keeping Score for that matter.

Flight 1143, on which the woman flew from Cleveland to Dallas/Fort Worth, was the last trip of the day Monday for the Airbus A320. But Tuesday morning the plane was flown back to Cleveland and then to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., back to Cleveland and then to Atlanta and finally back to Cleveland again, according to Daniel Baker, chief executive of the flight-monitoring site Flightaware.com.
