Dr. Tom Frieden, director for the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), said during a telephone press briefing Wednesday that you cannot get Ebola by sitting next to someone on a bus, but that infected or exposed persons should not ride public transportation because they could transmit the disease to someone else.

"I think there are two different parts of that equation,” he continued. “The first is, if you’re a member of the traveling public and are healthy, should you be worried that you might have gotten it by sitting next to someone? And the answer is no.”

“Second, if you are sick and you may have Ebola, should you get on a bus? And the answer to that is also no. You might become ill, you might have a problem that exposes someone around you,” he said.

I feel better.

So, where should my understanding come from? Twitter? TV talking heads?

Some half-assed, for-profit hospital dropped the ball and what's to show for it? The fella died (was almost certain to anyway) and two nurses who had direct physical contact with the patient himself are sick at present.

Not folks that were on the plane with him, not folks that used the water fountain after him, not folks that may have been around his sister's cousin's uncle's stepmother who sneezed, but just two unfortunate, caring broads just doing their job the best they could with what they had available (which, if anything, is a scathing indictment against for-profit, commodotized healthcare, but that's an entirely different conversation).

What do they get for their good deed? Ebola. Life's swell and all, but that almost certainly doesn't mean diddly shit to you, me, or the man in the moon as far as I can tell with respect to our likelihood to contract Ebola.

Do we know every single thing that's going on or every single scenario with requisite percentages listed by them as happening? No; we're not necessarily supposed to ... in many cases it'd be giving good scotch to drunken chimps for all the good it would do.

If there was something to worry about, they'd at the very least say "look, maybe don't travel around a great deal" or something like that. Our governmental overlords don't gain much from mass panic (unwarranted or warranted) and the deaths of swaths of taxpayers by keeping secrets ... or Keeping Score for that matter.

Calm down

I wasnt saying you should have better sources. Im saying the only source is questionable

Its probably nothing to worry about but no one truly knows yet because this hasn't happened before.

Christ almighty; I tried to mix in some fun with the response and I get the "calm down" routine. Whatever.

You need to take this more seriously, Don.

You're a big part of the problem.

In all of this I do not see why there is a negative consequence to completely shutting off air travel tot he West African countries where this started? Would that have not prevented the first guy from getting here? I do not see a political win fro not blockading.

A different question is why do we send the Army there to fight a disease?

Obama's on it.

I'm sure they can put the extra $6,000 I had to pay for health insurance this year to good use.

Because the people there have no idea how to fight/contain it.

It's too late now. I don't know if the movie Contagion has been mentioned in this thread yet, but the script is playing out.

Edit: corrected movie name

His flights went from Liberia to Belgium and then to the US, so I guess it would get complicated... unless there was a worldwide ban.

I wonder whether the 4,000 soldiers are really there to build beds, or whether they will be used to keep people from leaving eventually.

Good Lord. What the hell?

Quote:
CDC Director Dr. Tom Frieden said she never should have stepped foot on the flight, but another federal official told CNN that no one at the agency stopped her.

Before flying from Cleveland to Dallas on Monday, Vinson called the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to report an elevated temperature of 99.5 Fahrenheit and informed the agency that she was getting on a plane, the official said. She wasn't told not to board the aircraft, the official said.

Remember, there is nothing the US could have done to help control this.

Well one, why should the US be having to do anything? Besides sending docs or advising how to limit West Africans pain? Secondly, once they show they do not have a handle isolate and remove the threat.

We would do something because of the potential disaster it could cause. Sending docs, meds, real quarantine facilities....we throw money at causes all over the world just to by good will...

Dear Egypt,

here is a check for your annual aid in the amount of $1.3 Bill, we subtracted $200 mill this year to help battle the Ebola crisis as we see as a threat to the world. We assume you will undertand getting $200 Mill less in free money this year and in our next press conference we will state that you gave $200 mill towards this fight.

Hold on, let me check the exact foreign aid $$$ sent to Egypt before a few here call me out on a bad source.

I wasn't talking about money aid, doctors or other things. He sent 3,500 fucking Army personnel. Dumb ass doesn't think the CDC types couldn't do better like sending 3,500 Dustin Hoffman characters?.

Yeah, government-funded organizations like the CDC would never show incompetency like this.
