Hawks continue the homestand against the Calgary Flames, who are fresh off a shootout win in Nashville. The Flames are finally in the proper rebuild they'd put off for years after missing the playoffs three years with good-ish teams. With one of the worst farm systems in the league and no playoff berths since the Martin Havlat Blackhawks knocked them off in '09, this was a long time coming, and I applaud them for finally starting over. Unfortunately, they entrusted their rebuild to Brian Burke, hockey's drunk uncle, who has spent his time in Calgary complaining about analytics (people use them!), complaining about jersey numbers (they're too high now!), and having seriously wack-ass hair. He also decided that what the Flames need to do in a conference that features elite finesse/possession teams in Chicago, Anaheim, Los Angeles, San Jose, Dallas, and St. Louis is learn how to fight. So the Flames spent a day of training camp practicing how to fight. They must have needed two days, because notorious fuckface Trevor Gillies down on their Adirondack farm club bashed some guy's head into the ice while he was already down. Just picked up his head and slammed it on the ice really hard.

There's finally some good young talent coming through their ranks: Sean Monahan, Johnny Gaudreau, Sven Baertschi, to name a few. Samuel Bennett was the big prize of last year's low finish, but he tore up his shoulder in training camp and might miss the whole year. Maybe he hurt it learning to fight. In the veteran guidance department they have erstwhile Detroiter Jiri Hudler, who, I'm sorry, looks like a Mongoloid. Ladislav Smid, Matt Stajan, and Devin Setoguchi are kicking around as well. Mason Raymond seems young but is already 29 and probably all he'll ever be, which is a project-y third-line scorer. Also, these buffoons traded for Brandon Bollig.

This game should be a redux of the Sabres game: Bob Hartley is an admirable redass who will have the Flames' effort high, even if their execution is shit. Karri Ramo was in net against the Perds, so it'll probably be Jonas Hiller tonight. He's keeping the seat warm for some young Finn who's supposed to be the next Miikka Kiprusoff. Hiller always gave us fits when he was with the Ducks, so he could keep his bad team in the game.

Rozsival is back on the roster, but I wouldn't expect him to dress just yet. Still, that gets the Swedes reunited and Run-B.A.D. in the press box.

The first of the children:
Jiri Hudler - Sean Monahan - Devin Setoguchi
Curtis Glencross - Mikael Backlund - Paul Byron
Mason Raymond - Joe Colborne - Johnny Gaudreau
lol Brandon Bollig - Matt Stajan - David Jones
Mark Giordano, which Western Canadians obnoxiously pronounce "Gior-DANNO" - T.J. Brodie
Ladislav Smid - Dennis Wideman
Raphael Diaz - Deryk Engelland
Jonas Hiller

Here I'm allowed everything all the time:
Sharp - Toews - Hossa
Saad - Shaw - Kane
Bickell - Richards - Smith
Carcillo - Kruger - Morin
2-7
Hjalmarsson - van Riemsdyk
Oduya - Cumiskey
Crawford

I am not doing a thread for the Nashville game.

Some of your best GDT's are when they play vs the Preds because of your general distaste for small market teams.

Anyways, the Flames suck but they're not Sabres level of suck yet. Hawks win.

I love the live versions of the song with the big switchboard-looking analogue synthesizer and spastic dancing.

Bennett hurt it trying to do 1 pull-up.

I get a kick of them saying MAZ-DAH instead of MAHZ-DAH

It's not about the song, it's about the Hawks. Don't let CH distract you with his vibrant prose and creative juices. At this rate, Spaulding will end up pregnant.

Sounds like a crappier version of Amanda Palmer's. The whole song is based around four inversions of one chord and they didn't even get that right. It's kind of hard to play. Took me a while to get it right on a keyboard.

So much for the offensive prowess of Carcillo.

Man, the Flames are wretched. The Hawks need to step on some throats here. Lucky not to be down a goal after Richards coughed up another shorthanded breakaway.

18/18 through twenty for habitual pain in the ass Jonas Hiller. Hawks seem to be dogging it more than the team on zero days' rest.

I missed the first 10 minutes but what I saw was almost exclusively attack zone hockey by the Hawks.

Paul Byron had a breakaway that went off a post. There were two other shots on goal. Two. Calgary's getting absolutely housed here but the Hawks have nothing to show for it yet. My hope is that fatigue sets in for them soon.

Well the Flames played last night so I suspect by halfway thru the 2nd we'll see some tired legs.
That being said the Hawks were very good in the second of back to backs last year if I recall.

Just back from basketball lessons. CH is holding together nicely. Hiller may get to him yet.

Hiller isn't absorbing any of these shots. It's amazing. A weak backhand from Kaner and there's a rebound.
Hawks are on these guys like crazy but no joy yet...

Possession metrics after the game are going to be downright pornographic. The Flames might suck even more than the Sabres do. I'm pretty sure the night's leader in shots on goal through 28 minutes is noted retard Brian McGrattan, with two.

Because he wants to be better at watching Jr. High School Girls Basketball? With Binnoculars?

And Jergins.

And Kleenex.
