Bottom line: Bernstein hates Christians (Specifically Catholics) and Black people. Can we all agree with that? You should. Cuz it's true.
I'm not sure if he 'hate's black people. On the contrary, he's like one of those typical north shore kids (and yes, they all went to New Trier or Stevenson or Deerfield) who try to 'adopt' the black culture to prove how cool they and/or to rebel against the lame vanilla suburban upbringing (see Anne Hathoway and her boobies in the movie 'Havoc'). We all knew those kids.
Notice, Dan's discussion of hip hop and how he's super cool because he knows who Rakim, Terminator X and KRS-One are. I really thing Dan is trying soooo hard to be part of this bizarre liberal inclusion philosophy - that is, bizarre 'inclusion' of black folks, gay folks, etc - but at the same time, harboring a similarly bizarre hatred of the traditional 'majority' folks - Southerners, Christians, etc.
Dan's problem is that he paints with a broad brush - in both directions. ALL Southerners are racist because he met a couple of racists at Duke. ALL Christians want to kill gays. But at the same time, ALL black people are wonderful. ALL gay people are super. He refuses to see people as individuals and puts them into groups. He is guilty of the very thing he rails on weekly. His 'racism' isn't the Stormfront variety, but rather the 'subtle racism of low expectations'. It's obvious in his behavior. Specifically, about how he'll quickly criticize a white caller for his no-nos ('Jefferies', 'we'), but will not correct or criticize a black caller. Why not treat ALL people equally Dan?
As for Christians, his hatred of them is bizarre and frankly, I'm surprised that the powers that be allow that to be such a common topic on a sports show. Yes, many athletes are Christian. The reality is that those Christian athletes are probably doing more good for the world than Dan Bernstein every will and that stabs his ego. For all of his, 'hey look at me and my charity, aren't I wonderful' - a guy like Tim Tebow is doing more to make the world a better place than Dan will ever do. I'm sure Dan would say 'I use my pulpit to promote my noble cause'. No Dan, you use your pulpit to promote yourself. Many, many athletes - many of them Christian - have wonderful charities that do wonderful things, but don't cross over into that 'promoting the charitable GUY versus promoting the charity itself' thing. Peanut Tillman is a good example.
Yes, I get it. Some Christians are hypocrites. But you know what, many PEOPLE are hypocrites - Christian, Jew, Atheist or otherwise. Again, it's Dan painting with a broad brush. Dan despises their 'hypocrisy', yet he's one of the biggest hypocrites I've ever heard. Dan rails against them for being 'intolerant' and 'judgmental', yet he's easily the most intolerant person of anyone who disagrees with his 'settled' opinions that I've ever heard. He is EXACTLY what he claims to despise.
I'm not a Christian and have no dog in the hunt, but like most people, my daily life is filled with many Christians (and many Atheists and many Hindus based on my profession). I'd happily take a world full of Christians versus a world full of Dan Bernsteins any day.
