It is shocking to me that no people wandering through the area or some other worker stumbled upon this much earlier.

An elderly Midlothian resident who had been missing since November was found dead this month in a pile of tree branches at an Oak Forest park, authorities said.

An Oak Forest Park District employee was spraying for weeds Oct. 10 along a small creek next to a playground at the park in the 15500 block of Waverly Avenue and saw what appeared to be two human legs sticking out from a bundle of tree branches, according to police.

Edwin Stahl, of the 15000 block of Harding Avenue, died of unknown causes. An autopsy was inconclusive, pending further studies, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

It said the remains were largely skeletonized, which made it difficult for authorities to immediately identify the body, which was discovered about 11/2 miles from his home.

Family members could not immediately be reached for comment..

Stahl, a World War II veteran, last was seen Nov. 16, two days shy of his 89th birthday, vanishing after being discharged from Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.

The park district worker told police that the Metropolitan Water Reclamation District had cleared a log jam from the creek a week before he discovered the body, only about 20 yards from the playground at Waverly Creekside Park.

The portion of the creek where the body was found is close to Cicero Avenue, stretches only about a city block and is bordered by 156th Street and Waverly Avenue to the south and 155th Street and Kilpatrick Avenue to the north.

The worker told police that he first saw what appeared to be a human foot covered with only a sock. As he looked closer, he saw a second leg with a black shoe. The body’s left hand was missing. Firefighters were called to the scene and extricated the body from the debris field.

An autopsy showed no signs of foul play, and police said Stahl’s wallet still had money inside.

Stahl’s nephew, Hubert Downs, told the SouthtownStar in February that he dropped his uncle off at the hospital to have his ear examined. Stahl recently had been treated for skin cancer in the ear.

When Downs called the hospital Nov. 17, he learned that his uncle had been discharged the day before. Downs said it was not unusual for Stahl to take a bus or train home from the hospital.

When Stahl didn’t come straight home, Downs said he thought his uncle might have splurged on a motel room to celebrate his birthday. When he still failed to return home, Downs reported him missing Nov. 25.

Hospital staff told Midlothian police at the time of the disappearance that Stahl had shown some signs of paranoia during previous visits, but his family said he still was mentally alert and had not been diagnosed with any mental or memory problems.

While spending some time in Miami, there was a terrible stench that got worse every single day close to our pool. It was a dead guy in the lagoon. He had the cement shoes on so he was on the bottom and the smell was still terrible. Per reports he was killed about a month prior.

So to tell me a body was laying close to a park for 11 months and nobody noticed? Hmmmmm?

You should put that in the TripAdvisor review.

I was over there at Beggars when they found him. Sad story.

Conns that creek is right near the train tracks, there would be no reason for anyone to walk where they could have seen the body. The Public works probably just let that area go for a while.

I was watching a story about the human remains recently found that could be missing college student Hannah Graham, and they said it was basically nothing but a skeleton....which I thought wouldn't be possible only a month after her disappearance. But they had some expert on who said a dead body can be skeletonized in as little as three weeks. For some reason, I thought it would take much longer (assuming someone didn't use acid or some other means to accelerate it.)

It is quite variable depending on things like the environment, weather, bacteria and so on.

When I lived at 916 W. Diversey in a studio back when I was in law school I "found" a dead body that had been rotting for about a week. There was a terrible stench in the hallway for a few days, by the 2nd day I was joking that there was a dead body in the building, by day 4 I wasn't joking anymore. Me and a friend called the cops, we used our noses to figure out the apartment and then the manager opened the door...the smell was like nothing I have ever smelt before, just awful.

It was a young kid, apparently his spleen burst and he died curled up in a ball on his bed in obvious agony. He was white and weighed about 160 pounds....when the cops were doing their report they said it was a black male, about 220 pounds. That's how bloated and decomposed the body was! I had to correct the cops and tell them that was a small white kid.

2 female cops, while waiting for the meat wagon they were asking me if I knew anywhere in the neighborhood to get a good greek salad. I was like are you friggen kidding me!?! I was sure I would never eat again without puking and these two were already thinking of dinner.

Later they put air fresheners all over the building...for 6 months the place smelled like air freshners mixed with dead bodies. To this day I associate air freshener smell with dead people.
