Sources: Manager Joe Maddon has exercised an opt-out clause in his contract and is leaving the Tampa Bay Rays immediately.

My guess on Joe Maddon: He eventually winds up with the Cubs.

I would think he'd follow Friedman to L.A., but I don't know if they had a good relationship.

Maddon’s agent, Alan Nero, says he contacted several teams after opt-out. Expects 4 to 5 legit suitors. Says Maddon wants to explore FA.

Ken Rosenthal ‏@Ken_Rosenthal
Within industry, #Cubs viewed as a leading contender for Maddon. Renteria signed through 2016. Team could simply pay off rest of his deal.

I can't imagine leaving the Rays for the Twins, but I guess it can't be ruled out.

Seems reasonable. Maybe they'll just "trade" managers by the end of all this.

Next year does not necessarily mean next season.

I would absolutely love to have Maddon with the Cubs.

But I refuse to get my hopes up.

I fully expect this to go like the Girardi deal.

I think it's still fair to question this. Can't say they would pursue him with Don still employed:

Dylan Hernandez ‏@dylanohernandez 18m18 minutes ago
Andrew Friedman: Don Mattingly will manage the #Dodgers next season. Joe Maddon's availability won't change that.

I would welcome it not just because of his pretty decent track record, but also because one could then reasonably deduce that Ricketts was almost certainly going to commit to throwing some fairly crazy money at the right people very soon if not immediately.

True, but this wouldn't be dropping someone because they were bad (like Dale). This would be dropping someone so you could get one of the best managers in the world.

In a somewhat more perfect world, they'd hire Joe and be able to keep Ricky as a bench coach without risking the potential for some idiotic locker room schism.

I used to be a huge Baseball & Cubs fan. I haven't watched a game in 10 years. If the Cubs hire Maddon I'm all in & back. This would be the biggest coaching hire in this city in many many years.

I would like to think that you are possibly talking about the San Francisco Giants, but you aren't that smart.

Berns is like a little school Girl today.

I'm sure Terry already knew about this.

Is it 5 wins? As some say this is all a manager is good for....OK....he is just a manager, but he has done a really good job while he has been in a manager....and players seem to endorse his actions....I am OK with it.
