Didn't Lou Pinella come from the Rays as well?

Sucks for the current Cubs manager that everyone is basically like "Fire this guy, get this guy!".

Lou was gone by the time he got to Chicago.

Yeah, its fine. Just not gonna be some sweeping change to the team either way.

So far Maddon's agent says he has contacted several teams and expects 4-5 serious contenders. There are only 2 jobs open... this is going to be a common occurrence. Will be worse as teams start to make offers.

This is a no brainer, you make it happen. Renteria was never the guy to win you the title. You make the move sooner than you planned. Rick is a good guy, but he is suspect as a manager. Maddon is the best in the game, makes too much sense.

I also suspect he knows full well he's not on the books to be the guy that gets them to the promised land ... but if he happened to, terrific! So it's not like anybody's likely in the position of hoodwinking the fella.

And here it is. Like always, something that can't be proven to be false. Likely just made up:

Dan Bernstein ‏@dan_bernstein
#Cubs plan to talk to Maddon. Could still try to retain Renteria in some capacity, if it works.

True, but this wouldn't be dropping someone because they were bad (like Dale). This would be dropping someone so you could get one of the best managers in the world.

that's some wonderful gymnastics you are doing

If retaining Renteria gets between the Cubs and Maddon, that will be a epic failure. It would be a huge upgrade. Send Renteria up to the Twins or down to Tampa.

Honestly, I shouldn't have responded because it was a stupid troll post. But if his point was to suggest the Cubs can't find a good manager, I don't think this is evidence of that. Which is why a handful of teams will be interested, despite having someone already in the role.

Maybe 5 wins...maybe. Good manager, bad manager, it's all pretty much the same.

If my team had limited resources until 2019, I would much rather spend the extra money on field talent than a 60 year old field manager.

All I heard last year was how great Renteria was with his magical Spanish incantations. Is that out the window now?

This would be the second manager fired under sketchy circumstances. Simply considering firing a second manager in two years begs the question of weather the administration is capable of finding a good one.

61 years old by the time spring training rolls around. Is that really the demographic of a guy to lead a rebuild?

As I said with Girardi, if the money is equal, why would the Cubs be the affirmative choice of a guy with options?

Career .517 winning percentage.

I guess hiring Maddon is what Ricketts was thinking when he said Theo could put together an 83 win team in his sleep.

The great Andrew Friedman won't even dump Mattingly for him.

He should follow up with a "Cubs plan to sign a free agent pitcher" tweet.

He wants the Cubs to get Maddon so badly. Just as badly as he wanted them to get Girardi. He actually suggested something like maybe Renteria would stay as the manager for the Spanish speakers. My God!

They might keep Renteria
They might talk to Maddon
They might keep Renteria with Maddon
They might get Maddon and let Renteria go
They might not get Maddon at all

Remember when Ricky was so keen to talk about the minor league prospects while he was managing major league players?

Como se dice "karma"?

Strictly going by managerial stats,Renteria had a much better 1st season than Maddon had a 1st or 2nd season as manager. Also,Maddon managed his Rays to just 4 games better than the Cubs this year.

I'm not crazy about Renteria after the games with his "positive spin" BS,but I don't think he is a bad in game manager. Does he get credit for any of the positives last season?

All signs pointing to Maddon coming to the Cubs.

Let's hope that isn't a fucking jinx.

I like RR but obviously when a Joe Maddon is available, you get him and seemingly that is what they are doing!!!

Wow, let's hope Buster is right!!

Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 5m5 minutes ago

Joe Maddon could be the latest elite talent the Cubs acquire, as they build what looks to be a powerhouse team. http://insider.espn.go.com/blog/buster- ... nToChicago

SAN FRANCISCO – The Chicago Cubs are not in the World Series and have not been since 1945, but on Friday afternoon, they were the talk of the World Series after news broke of Joe Maddon’s departure from Tampa Bay.

Maddon is not the manager of the Cubs yet, but in the same way that Hillary Clinton is not a 2016 presidential candidate yet. A river of gossip about Maddon going to the Cubs flowed among folks on the field here, and in the offices of other teams, which is why Maddon as the leader of the North Siders is regarded as a fait accompli – and why rival officials fully expect the issue of tampering to come up before this plays out.

Maddon is widely regarded as one of the best managers in the sport, and assuming that he lands with the Cubs, he will be one more elite piece to the growing monster that other teams see forming.

The thing that's funny is that the basic Beane/Epstein/modern/SABRmetric philosophy is that a manager is just a guy who sits in the dugout and calls out names. The decisions are all self-evident based upon numbers. That being the case, I don't see why Ricky Renteria or a reasonably intelligent chimp can't make the same calls as Joe Maddon.
