Was Theo part of the group that also threw Francona under the bus on his way out of Boston? If so, that should make for an incredibly disturbing trend over the past five years for any manager thinking of being in his employment.

Seamless transition

"Among active managers, Dusty Baker of the Cincinnati Reds, Mike Scioscia of the Los Angeles Angels, Mike Matheny of the St. Louis Cardinals and Joe Maddon of the Tampa Bay Rays speak Spanish fluently"

The question is does he know Ricky's Magic Spanish?

I agree with that.

With that being said, if choosing between Ricky and Joe, you go with Joe.

Perfect example of no matter what the Cubs do guys like dolphin are going to mock them.

If they had come out immediately after the news of Maddon leaving the Rays and said we are not interested in Maddon, then this thread would have been mocking them for passing on the manager that they need.

‏#Cubs plan to talk to Maddon. Could still try to retain Renteria in some capacity, if it works.

I wonder if Theo Epstein ever switched dates midway through the dance when another girl showed interest.

Renteria would have to have no dignity to accept it.

pay Theo huge money to build an impeccable network of scouting and development then tank seasons because they can only find players at the top of the draft

hire managers after exhaustive searches but fire each of them before either can prove themselves

Hmmmm if I'm Theo do I invest 2-3 season on an unknown manager and hope he becomes Maddon? Ooooooooor do I hire the known quantity who thrived in an organization dedicated to developing young players and using advanced metrics to dictate management decisions. Who has extensive post season experience and has been to the World Series.

I know what I'd do. And we all know GD is a die hard Ventura guy. Lights up a room!

You don't need to find the next one when you can just go ahead and get Joe Maddon.

Do you want me to deluge you with quotes about making decisions for the long term or will you concede that they were spoken?

If that is your operating principle, then yes, you rely on your superior skills in hiring for which you are being paid well above market and stay with the guy who is at least semi known to you.

If they truly relied on advanced metrics in decision making, they would understand there is almost no statistical difference between Joe Maddon and Ricky Renteria in the manager's chair

Renteria' bullpen management and insistence on bunting disagrees.

How does hiring Joe Maddon for 5 years hurt your long-term team prospects? Especially now, when pieces are starting to come into place.

It doesn't.
