Remember the Day 1 quote about paying for future production?

So, you're anticipating Joe Maddon having no further success in the MLB?

What are the statistics on 60 year-old managers with previous success being over the hill?

61 before next season.

I anticipate that he will have very little objective impact on whatever team he coaches but that people normally devoted to only accepting what can be statistically proven will attempt to attribute all sorts of intangible improvements to his presence.

So you feel a manager really has no impact on a season or that Maddon just isn't a good manager.

Or, third option, I guess, is you think Renteria is an excellent manager or at least on par with Maddon.

I don't believe a manager makes much of a difference on a record in baseball.

I think they can have a negative effect. Stupid managers can certainly hurt teams, but smart managers can't help that much.

Why isn't Maddon a better candidate to guide the Sox over Ventura?

Been answered already. It is the same reason Mike North had to broker an extension for Scott Skiles.

He hasn't won anything for the Cubs. In fact, he has administered through the worst stretch of baseball in Cubs history.

If we were on a Florida Marlin board, I don't think I would have a problem with someone mocking Ozzie Guillen's accomplisments.

I think a manager can make a difference by the way he leads a ballclub. But the decisions he makes or strategies he implements are largely insignificant. I don't think you can just say a guy is a "good" or a "bad" manager. Some guys are good fits for certain teams at certain times. Guys like Guillen and Billy Martin are good for shaking up moribund clubs. But they have a shelf life. Eventually they just wear a team out and then it gets ugly. I certainly don't think Joe Maddon is going to sweep in and make the Cubs any better than they will be with Renteria.

So let me get this straight.

You want to hire a knucklehead who essentially has had no success other than a one year magic carpet ride to the World Series. Who is looking to hustle another owner for a gig to pay for his yacht and children's trust fund over an accomplished manager who is consensus top-5 in the game still hungry for his 1st World Series to complete his resume.

Alright then.

You are trying really hard to not understand this very simple topic.

You honestly just made an argument that it is a BAD thing that Ozzie won a title.

I hope leash is reading this!

He's got a .524 winning percentage. Isn't that about the same as the Great Joe Maddon's?

I think I'm going to come up with a way to score the idiocy of Cubs fans.

I'm pretty sure "lucky to win the World Series in 2005" will be worth the most points.

Cubs fans would kill for a "one year magic carpet ride." Also, look at some of the guys Ozzie had to run out there from '07 onward. Kenny Williams didn't do him a lot of favors after 2006.

Kirkwood, your defense is "he only won ONE World Series!" Do the numbers 1908 and 1945 get thru your thick skull?

It's the same as the Packers 2010 season. Sometimes seasons click. I understand you're greatly offended. Get over it.

If that is the case and everything could end up being just a crapshoot, why are you OK with Theo basically forfeiting 4 straight seasons?

Your posts in this thread have just been terrible. You complained earlier about wanting to have reasonable baseball discussion and yet you are the one contributing most to them not being that.

The Sox and Ozzie may be the most obvious and simple concept in the history of baseball discussions on here.

I'm sorry your "HAHA, the Sox won't get Maddon" thread crashed and burned. Stop doubling down on it.

Rehiring a manager that was fired by the same team is a simple concept? What? That's common? Especially one that left on such great terms!

Simple!

Oh no. You are making things so much worse for yourself.

When did the Sox fire Ozzie?

Where he did it doesnt matter

He won two world series with the Red Sox. You just acted like winning one makes someone good at their job.

This is pretty huge. You've just undermined every post you've ever made ripping Epstein's track record

would be an improvement over Ohio.

Yes and no. It can definitely affect things.

Just because Da Coatch won a Super Bowl in Chicago didn't make him a good coach with the Saints.

For this discussion it doesnt matter

Dolphin repsonded to Kirkwood ripping Ozzie by sarcastically saying "Yeah he only WON the world series"

So it stands to reason that he must be as impressed, if not twice as much, by Epstein's two rings

Theo - 3 seasons.

Two of those seasons a record higher or equal to your bro Hahn.

Not the same, RPB. We are talking about the Sox and Ozzie won a ring with the Sox. Theo, so far, hasn't gotten the Cubs any higher than 4th place.
