Did Renteria get a fair shake?
No, he was fucked by an evil employer without being given a chance. 50%  50%  [ 15 ]
Yes, when you have a chance to get an all-time great like Joe Maddon honor and morality go out the window. 50%  50%  [ 15 ]

Do you think because he will receive the value of his contract (no, his pay can't be "docked"), it's okay to treat him like shit?

To be accurate, Theo has never had morals. His whole career is based off bending/breaking the rules.

What do you mean? That winning justifies any behavior? I know you desperately want this team to win, but I know you don't feel that way.

Theo and Ricketts and Kenney are sitting in a conference room cackling like the Duke brothers.

Not any behavior but launching a manager early falls into occupational hazard for me

I cant think of a likely scenario where I thought a player or manager was treated unfairly.

Maybe some classless moves by teams with veterans but I just dont have sympathy for these guys. I guess its the money.

Its business. When you get a chance to get the best Manager in the game, you do it. Would you be against the Bears firing Trestman if Harbaugh is available after the season?

Did they launch Renteria?

Well, baseball is generally a meritocracy. Guys usually fail before being fired. I don't think anyone can honestly say that Renteria (and to some degree even Sveum) was given a chance. These guys were both up and comers and Epstein has effectively stalled their career trajectories on a whim.

My heart isn't breaking for guys making millions a year, but I certainly don't think any reasonable person should do anything but hold Ricketts and Epstein in contempt for this maneuver. If Ricketts is really the honorable guy he obviously so desperately wants people to think he is, he would tell Theo, "I don't care how bad you want this guy. I'm drawing the line here on a human basis."

Ridiculous! If that's the case, your bosses should be actively seeking to replace you. I don't need to know anything about you or your employment to know there are people who would be considered better at doing the job you have. You don't really want to live in the world, you're philosophizing about.

Oh, no I really disagree with that

Business is business.

People are ready to toss Mattingly after winning 93 and 95 in his first two years

Coaches are fired or let go prematurely for a better candidate in all sports. This is not unique.

I'm really shocked at this coming from you. "Business is business"? Does that mean anything is justifiable in pursuit of money?

And this would be quite unique. Rarely is a manager fired for managing a team exactly the way his superiors wanted it managed.

You are all weak sisters.

Renteria will go home to his pseudo-mansion and be just fine.

This isn't like laying off a bunch of minimum wage workers. "Business is business" is a fine motto for professional sports, where minimum wage is typically half a million dollars.

Sports I think is different. It's a hobby for many owners. They do goofy shit with coaches all the time.

See my post above. That isn't the point though. It's just more dishonorable behavior from a dishonorable franchise. Maybe Theo can figure out how to sell his soul to increase Ricketts' revenue streams.

The subject here is professional sports, not my business or your business. Professional sports are high risk high reward. you really can't compare professional sports to any other business. Anyone in professional sports knows it's different and knows the way the game is played.

No, not anything. But what are we talking about here?

It's a guy making a ton of money who will likely get another job in the field quickly. Were not taking food out of people's mouths here

Coaching in general (any sport) is a short term proposition (what is the average tenor? 3 years?)and no one should count on anything.

I see it like a company hiring a consultant and then replacing him with someone better. The original consultant still got paid and can work anywhere he wants

What they know is it's a pure meritocracy and "what have you done for me lately?" What has Renteria done wrong? And if you sign Maddon and LaRussa becomes available next season do you chase him? You're not really suggesting this is a normal way of doing business- letting a manager under contract twist in the wind while you chase the flavor of the moment through "back channels"?

What other team has done something like this? And don't cite Mattingly and his wins. The bar is much higher there. They have the highest payroll in baseball. To a certain degree, he has failed. Renteria has done exactly what was demanded and what was expected. Perhaps even slightly more.
