Valbuena is fine for the one month he plays until May. I think that's the Cubs plan to keep the salary low on Bryant for the future.

i know that i've fallen asleep during the last few cubs seasons, but did i miss something where rick renteria ended up being a really good manager in the end? my uncle who goes to a shit-ton of games was calling him "rent-a-manager" all season long (and we did a few games in sept and he didnt conversationally pull me aside to issue a mea culpa, i think he stood by his original judgment) and i just read that "The Cubs went 31-28 to finish the season but were outscored by 43 runs over that stretch. That's smoke and mirrors."

if the bears were able to hire, say, jim harbaugh* in place of trestman after last season would the board's packers fans rise up and say that the bears are screwing over trestman and what did he do to deserve this? the offense averaged ~30ppg and the arrow was pointing up because the defense couldn't possibly get any worse!

* harbaugh = baseball joe maddon. i think they've had just about the same amount of success in their respective sports, and both are known to be eccentric figures or "characters" given their demeanor/antics/etc. maybe harbaugh's a little bit more meatball and maddon a bit more statistical, but the main thing is they're both considered to be !!! coaches and yet they've never gotten farther than their sport's respective final/s.

Of course Renteria got screwed like hypothetical Trestman would have. But Bears fans would have been joyous and I would've hated it. He owns McCarthy.

Funny, because I've read right here in this very forum that the 31-28 finish was evidence of how they were ready to compete and that The Plan was working. Now you're telling me they were actually still terrible and it was Renteria's fault. Very interesting.

The screw job is that they are publicly humiliating him by courting another person for the job he holds. I have no problem if they indeed didn't like his management. Fine, say that and fire him. THAT happens every day and is appropriate. Making him sit there like a cuckold is the objectionable management style and should certainly diminish the esteem in which Theo and Maddon are held.
