Did Renteria get a fair shake?
No, he was fucked by an evil employer without being given a chance. 50%  50%  [ 15 ]
Yes, when you have a chance to get an all-time great like Joe Maddon honor and morality go out the window. 50%  50%  [ 15 ]

I've never seen JORR so thoroughly trounced.

Nah.

You guys picked a bad battle for your "Sox fans are wrong no matter what they say about the Cubs" bit.

Even Kirkwood admitted that Renteria got a bad deal.

What are you talking about? Your team looks like a clown team. As usual. I picture Epstein and Hoyer getting excited like little kids. "This guy is available, Theo! We have to get him!!!!!!!" There is no "plan". Just a couple goofs running around like chickens with their heads cut off. They're great at PR though.

You'll get some grief for this, but it actually is the official story from the Cubs.

Joe Maddon opted out without any knowledge that the Cubs would be interested, and within an hour it was reported that the Cubs were the favorites to land him. I imagine Theo got a google alert on his phone during dinner that Joe Maddon was available, looked up his agents number, and said "He's our guy. Let's get this done" and then the agent told the media that the Cubs were interested.

you're obviously mocking it, but wouldn't you say that's pouncing when the opportunity presents itself ? what do you think Theo should have done ? call all the managers he's interested in daily that are under contract asking when they'll be available ???

I think he should have enough belief in a guy that he hired less than a year ago and asked to manage a pile of dogshit (Which said guy did admirably, by the way. Sini tells me he went 31-28 to end the season while being outscored by 43 runs. That's managing.) that he isn't looking to replace him with every guy who is perceived to be "better" that hits the job market. Do you really find that idea so preposterous?

I highly doubt that Theo was shocked when Maddon opted out. Everyone seemingly knew the Cubs were the destination even as the breaking news hit.

There are a number of scenarios that make a lot more sense. The primary one is that Joe Maddon isn't an idiot, and knew that he had an opt-out clause if the GM were to leave, and that his agent also didn't keep that a secret to potential good fits for the next job, and when the GM left the conversations had already begun.

I, unlike JORR, don't really see this as a wrong or bad move. They got a better manager. They just likely tampered and certainly screwed over a guy. It will be hard to prove the tampering though and as we all know when it comes to billion dollar corporations, the ends always justify the means!

Yeah, I guess we disagree there. I'm not even sure what a "better manager" is. And it's not something that is easily defined. Obviously, if Maddon wins he'll be perceived as "better", but that kind of contradicts the idea that the Cubs have all these great pieces that were ready to win before anyone even mentioned Maddon. I guess I never realized that Joe Maddon was such a huge part of Theo's Plan. Thank God he got him!

I'm sure that if the Cubs didn't reach out to Maddon and Renteria struggled over the next couple years, Sox fans would say the Cubs didn't do their due diligence when they had the opportunity.

I'm sorry you think Ricky is wealthy

Relative to, say, a run of the mill lawyer, he is.

I'll have to ask one to find out

Have confidence in the guy he hired after an reportedly exhaustive search/interview process.

but Maddon wasn't available during that 'exhaustive search/interview process'
now he is
if you have a chance to upgrade, do it .

CAN YOU GUYS BELIEVE THE WAY THE SEAHAWKS TREATED MATT FLYNN????

It was his first year! He was part of Carroll's "plan"!! Oh, unless the plan changed when somebody better came along, which means there never was a plan! Haha! It's all just PR!

So has the new Cubs manager just come out of the draft, or was the current Seattle QB under contract with another team?

If the answer is no to both of these, then the analogy makes no sense.

You win the prize for worst comparison!

Flynn was brought in to compete with Tarvaris Jackson and then whoever they drafted. He was not the starting quarterback.

What happened literally was the plan.

Wait - is Maddon under contract with a different team? Let's not forget how all of this really started about 2 weeks ago.

Doesn't matter. It fits all of the qualifications:

1. They hired Flynn to a multi-year deal
2. He stayed for one year, and lost his job even faster than Ricky did
3. He lost his job to another person that wasn't even an option to them when the original deal was signed
4. I've never heard anybody say that Flynn is a jerk, so he must be a nice guy and we must then feel bad for him, even though he gets all of his $ and is now making even more $ with another team

It's a perfect comparison, but it's just a stupid premise, just like this thread

 A perfect comparison would be to compare this situation to, you know, another actual BASEBALL situation.

Your analogy was so perfect you had to use the NFL.

No. It's pretty horrible. Flynn was never named the starter. He was signed with the expressed idea that he would be competing for the job.

There is also no manager competition going on here. It's not like Ricky has a chance to beat out Maddon. Just a bad comparison all around. It's not the same thing as a competition between players.

The only fair comparison is to what happened with Savard, but at least he had more than one year and had shown that he was bad.

Renteria did a pretty good job last year by all accounts. Remember how good the Cubs were in the second half?

Yes,I do. He seems like a good dude and a smart baseball guy. Who's to say he can't or isn't better than Maddon at this point in time going forward?

Based on what? I would have kept Rick.

It is another sport, but a fair comparison is what happened to Larry Drew in Milwaukee with the new owners. I didn't like that either.
