Had one for 15 years before I was married. The thing was a stone killer & baby (kitten) layer. Except for around my parents & I, the animal was damned near feral. For about a decade, I got complaints about him knocking up other cats 3-4 blocks over. (Yes, I know that made me a bad pet owner, but who was I to deny my gangster cat)

The cat never needed a litter box & actually would go in the can.

I loved that cat, everyone would say that was MY cat, but I knew better. That cat was his own boss.

We have thought about fostering but it would be too hard to give up the dogs.

It gets 'kind of' easier after time. We just keep telling ourselves that us fostering a dog opens up a spot in the kennel to rescue a dog from the streets/kill shelter. We pick and choose who we foster though to ensure housebroken/doesn't chew on shit etc ahead of time.

Once we get married I'm sure we'll rescue a puppy and just have one dog.

So you would alienate family members if their manners weren't up to your standards.

I enjoy playing with my girlfriend's family's dog when we visit her parent's house for a weekend in Michigan.

I like the concept of having a dog more than actually having one. They really cool and fun for like 25% of the time. Then the other 75% is walking, feeding, disciplining and picking up their shit.

We always had a shitload of cats in our house, as a yout, so I don't want pets in my house. I'm busy enough with a four and a two year old. I have no desire to walk a dog in the wind/rain/snow, or at 4:30 AM. It's hard enough to keep the house clean, without an animal making more of a mess. Having said that, I'm not going full Bernstine. Pets are definitely a part of the family, just not mine.

Cats (one cat actually) are kind of fun to have around. Kind of like a living household accessory. Low maintenance. It must look cool though.

All I know is when I came home in the summers(& didn't have to work), I'd come in at 2-3-4am after chasing and closing, just like my cat. :king:

We have two cats, a male named Bubba (after golfer Bubba Watson) and female named Soda (because its bubbly and refreshing). They are definitely family. Bubba is the most affectionate cat I have ever seen. We don't throw them parties or anything like that, but my wife did have a green jacket made for Bubba after he won his second Masters earlier this year.

I find it funny the notion that dogs are lesser creatures who simply live in the moment and have a loyalty related solely to their current circumstances and how you can help them.

A human would have the exact same loyalties if it weren't for modern construction, plumbing, electricity, and lack of anarchy.

If the zombie apocalypse actually occurred, you would find the loyalties of dogs to be much more consistent than the loyalties of man.

I agree with Chus. I had a dog growing up and I loved her, but she was a lot of trouble. Having 4 kids is crazy enough, no need to add to the madness with pets that live in our house and we have to take care of. We do have a couple cats that live on our porch. The only thing I do for them is give them a swift kick every couple weeks when one of them gets under my feet while walking to the car.

I had a Siamese that my ex-wife took when we got divorced. That was a pretty cool cat.

I wouldn't ascribe such a superficial and insecure term as "love" to a dog. They are too primal and intelligent to care about such semantics.

I would assume that a beastly ladies man like yourself could really relate.
