Not what you think they WILL DO, what they SHOULD do

This is what you think the best moves would be to win next year and beyond

If you were the GM, what would you do as far as FA

They've been linked to

Lester, Masterson, Martin, Peavy, Robertson

I want Lester (as much as it might cost, pitching prices always go up. Im not worried it will cripple the team)
Masterson (Buy low-ish)
Robertson (can never have enough bullpen. Hawk is right)

No thanks to Martin, Peavy, Sandoval or Cabrera

I like your 2 with Hammel for Masterson.

At the right price, I would love Sandoval. But he's going to get a big deal.

Seems like an awesome dude and good ballplayer. Gotta say I wouldn't have a problem giving him a shit ton of Reinsdorf's money.

Yeah, I wouldn't be mad if the Cubs got him.

I could see him on the Sox

Lester and Brandon McCarthy for sure. I don't get the "we need a Johnny Gomes type in the clubhouse" talk. Rizzo is just fine being the team leader. Martin would be gravy.

Nothing against Sandoval, but for the Cubs journey to WS champions to feel "right," I don't want a guy from another team who has already won recently. I want hungry players who have something to prove.

leary might be a good pickup... although nobody is really talking about quintano and hes probably the brightest available upcoming star out there. if we could get him with palmero i think we could bolster our outfield tremendously

RPB, curious why you listed Robertson. Didn't you say in another thread the bullpen was an odd choice for help?

I think they should get Lester, and an OFer to replace Coughlan. Markakis maybe?

Sign:
Jon Lester - ace/#2 that'll become a 3 as he ages

Justin Masterson - sinker/slider pitcher who can move into the bullpen and is a fantastic clubhouse presence
or
Gavin Floyd - injury reclaimation. Fastball, cutter, curve & change. Has the tools so giving the guy a real pitching coach in Bosio will be very helpful.

Scherzer would be the object of my affection and I agree with stupid Kirkwood on Gavin Floyd

I want nothing to do with Scherzer. I keep expecting him to start looking like Lincecum but he hasn't. After getting a big contract from the Cubs I fear he will.

Would love to have Yu Darvish if the Cubs could work something out with Texas.

McCarthy is a good fit for the White Sox. I just don't see the Yankees letting him walk so easy after the way he pitched for them. But maybe Cashman is going to focus on higher profile guys.

low rent pitching (Gavin Floyd)

nothing else. Gear up for contention in 2016 and evaluate all the kids over 2015.

1) Carlos Gonzalez

2) backup catcher who can hit, even a little bit! (like the guy in 2013)

3) Jonny Gomes

4) Bring back SP Hammels

5) Brandon McCarthy or somebody similar.

6) Some scrap heap veteran INF help.

7) A big splash FA pitcher wouldn't hurt.

They should "not tamper" with Mike Trout.

Gonzalez is a walking injury. He will be Gomes in 3 years. #4 and #5 is the same thing. Why do the Cubs need more infielders?

Did you even watch the Cubs??? THEY NEED MORE INFIELDERS! Castro and Rizzo missed a lot of games due to injury. The guy they had fill in at 1st was just released. (C. Valaika) Baez looks like crap so far,Bryant will not be called up until May,Valbuena is very streaky.

That's why!

I somwhat agree. I believe the Cubs were playing it safe because it was near the end of the season and it helped them tank.

Rizzo, Baez, Castro, Bryant cover the infield for 5/6 of the year.

Valbuena is the swiss army knife that can play 2nd & 3rd. Baez can fill-in at SS. Olt (it's put up or shut up time) could be a nice bench player at 3rd or 1st. Theo/Jed should pick up a bench SS/2B with some speed. That'd be nice.

Time to amend with Martin off the board. I still want Lester and McCarthy. I keep hearing the Gomes talk and I just scratch my head. If we need a veteran to teach professionalism, then sign Ichiro. Also, how about a E Jax for Ubaldo swap?

along the amended lines: they SHOULD not pursue any restricted free agents. Stay true to the philosophy. That leaves Lester. Get him at all costs.
