After 25 years of being a money pit and nobody wanting the place because it cant support itself financially, even without paying any debt, finally a Judge said "SHUT IT DOWN", It will be boarded up after the holidays. CLOSED

More huge vacant tracts of land and real estate now available in the South Burbs.

The south suburbs are a strange and foreign land to me. I had to look the place up; it looks like Alternate Universe Randhurst. That mall is gone too. (miss u randhurst)

Back in the late 70's I'd ride out there with my best friend and his mom. It seemed like it took forever, then and now. You couldn't have told me we weren't close to Kentucky. My south suburban wannabe  wife loved the area so much, we moved nearby when we first got married. Working in the Loop, we were so miserable, we moved near McCormick Place with two months left on our lease.

I'm frankly amazed it's lasted the past 15 years.

If we're talking about the same guy, Orland or Frankfort. And they'll LOVE him there.

Sometimes I roll my eyes when people say all this "wah wah I'm practically in Wisconsin/Kentucky" crap about the suburbs, but then I checked the map, and yeah, there's a pretty steep drop between Chicagoland and Downstate once you get south of Matteson. I'll allow it.

How much longer does Ford City Mall have left? Last time I drove threw the parking lot to get over to Pulaski, it seemed like the mall roads hadn't been resurfaced since the mid 90s.

Randhurst is still there. It just has a hotel where the food court used to be and you can drive through Kay-bee toys.

I do not acknowledge Poor Man's Deer Park as the true Randhurst of my youth, though I did enjoy a cheap pizza buffet at that one pizza place.

Agreed. I drove through the middle and it weirded me out. Seeing a Costco on my beloved Monkey Wards is a sad sight.

i can't believe charlestowne mall is still around...it's creepy in there, especially around the food court because of the carousel.

That mall sucked even when it was fully occupied. It's just hilarious now.

hey. do not hate on the c-towne. that place was bangin' in the mid 90's. and the arcade was sizzlin' hot. jr's hot dog's $1.25 for a sack of fries was the best deal ever.

20 years ago Matteson was in recievership and the company I worked for managed the place, thus I got to lease it. I got about 45 churches call me for space, 2 insurance guys and a few other nationals wanted info. Signed 2 leases in 1 year, both temporary stores,

15 years later, another company I worked at got the management, same exact deal, same tenants same problems.

then I went to work for the devil who owned 3 office buildings in the are and even he didnt want the place...for FREE!

You can walk into Village Halls in the Heights for example and buy houses for $1...yes $1...if you bring them up to code. So, go spend $40K for a house that is worth maybe $50K when you are done with it....Gary, areas of Lansing, Stickney, Matteson, you name it...

I still stand by my suggestion of the South Suburban Zoo! They have the land, the money, the people, etc etc etc...could create some sort of mini mall with it and rent out to some commerce and of course charge for the Zoo,....but it is something people would travel to that have never even considered going to any of these areas. My idea was shot down 20 years ago, 15 and 8 years ago. meanwhile, the entire area slowly falls into more of a complete shit hole...but when that Airport gets to Peotone! Look out!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Have they finally bulldozed the demilitarized zone that was the Dixie Square Mall? Haven't been by it since 2006ish but large parts of it were still standing then.

My first job back in the day was Foot Locker in Lincoln Mall.

I haven't been in that mall in 15 years at least.

I heard everyone that used to shop there has now turned to Orland Mall.

Yea. There is some major work being done there now. Aren't all indoor malls in trouble? Apparently people are back to not minding shopping in the cold & snow.

Last few times I've been to Hawthorn, it's been decent enough, but that's been three or four years now, come to think of it.

well it's probably a combination of that and the fact that online shopping is still hugely popular.

i thought by now charlestowne would have gone the way of st. charles mall, being destroyed for good even after the theatre but yeah they are doing all kinds of stuff over there.

Yeah, a friend of mine did that. I think he actually did a little better than that but it was a huge fucking headache. When the house was under construction it was constantly getting broken into and people were always stealing his materials.

Another friend who grew up in the Heights told me you can probably count the houses worth over $100,000 there on one hand.

isn't that the point of the new randhurst? it's a "lifestyle center" IIRC, which means you can theoretically walk across it to go to restaurants hotels five below marshalls movie theatres.... whatever, but it's designed so people can drive right up to whatever section you want. it's a more proactive version of old orchard in that regard, although i have to admit that the westfield shopping center(TM) outdoor mall concept worked great in san diego when i was out there like "holy shit, this is just like that mall out by grandma's except it's way better out here" on ~dec27th when i got my ecko unlimited "i am power unlimited in the guise of man" shirt to meet ol girl's father with.

san diego old orchard =
Image

3 levels and people you generally want to see outside outside and all that and it's 68-72 for the next week in san diego right now while it's 29/34 out here and etc etc. of course when it gets down to like ~50 out there people need jackets (and the mall declares that JACKETS ARE OPTIONAL right now) and it's kind of like houston where if they ever got ice on their roads people would die and shit. one the way to a strip club no doubt. horrible stuff...

just like the zombie randhurst that can never make up for the old memories like the ~92-93 image comics visit where i got rob liefeld and people to sign my savage dragon #1 and youngblood and something else. or the dunkin donuts that ben weasel legendarily was supposed to have worked at, so when i asked him once he's like "worked there? i managed the fucking place" ---- ahhh the memories. i suppose there's always stratford square or something if you wanna go get nostalgic over a soon to be gone mall.

It is the sad state of affair we are in. Formerly decent to good neighborhoods/areas continue to decline as jobs and decent wages went bye-bye. The economic heyday of the US is long over.

I went to college and have an MA (2 actually, both are worthless) and I live more or less like my grandfather who drove a bread truck: A 2 thousand foot 1950s house. 2 kids. 2 cars. 'cept he got a pension! When I retire I'll be living in one of those $1 houses in Matteson.

I have a somewhat similar story. We were living on 61st and Dorchester, and moved out to Park Forest, right across the street from another mall (Park Forest Plaza aka Centre Mall). As kids, we loved it because we could go to the mall at any given time, as well as the discount movie theater (Dollar Show). In hindsight, the mall was very lame, and Lincoln Mall pretty much put Centre Mall out of business.

Is that Fashion Valley? I had sriracha for the first time out there.

One of the uber-suburban things my family used to do was go to Oak Brook Centre, the goyish Old Orchard, around the holidays when everything was all lit up all purdy. We'd do a little Christmas shopping but mostly just soak up the atmosphere and eat at California Pizza Kitchen.

After being rudely uprooted from the cozy confines of Harwood Heights, I spent 8th grade through the 20s in that area.

Unincorporated Will County - or Green Garden as it's called.

Lincoln Mall was pretty ghetto as back in the early 80s compared to the much more upscale Orland Square.

The Cicero Twin Drive-In Theater and I-80 Drive In was where all the action went down.

Great mammaries ....oops memories of the entire time.

Lincoln Mall should have been shut down 2-3 decades ago.
