Best thing she ever did was let "The Blues Brothers" do anything they wanted while shooting in the city. Made for a lot of memorable scenes in one of my favorite pictures. RIP, Jane.

Not sure how long it's been there but I didn't notice it until about a couple months ago and I have probably passed it thousands of times since I've been driving.

I didn't know they renamed it this. I guess it's kind of fitting.

Well damn, I guess I DID in fact have a reason to not vote for Pat Quinn.

the one thing i'll always remember about jane byrne is reading that she had an appearance at cabrini green, evidently called "easter at cabrini green" or wait YEAH she was claiming that she was gonna live there as part of her campaign for something (evidently her stance on public housing was shit) so she moved in for all of 3 weeks.

so not a publicity stunt. duh.

and while she was there she had people grab a blowtorch and a giant slab of metal and weld the back door to her building shut, so of course when she left 3 weeks later cabrini green was world-renown for its lack of maintenance/upkeep so nobody ever bothered to remove the welded back door, so that one building had only ONE entrance in and out on the ground floor so it became known as "the fortress" or something because all the dealers there knew there was only one way for cops to come in and out so they just had to have a lookout for that door.... and then the cops would go up to the 17th floor or something to try and nab somebody, but people had literally busted out holes in the walls between the apartment buildings (and maybe they'd do it in a closet or hide it behind a dresser) so if people were gonna get got they could escape through a maze of secret passageways and get to other apartments entirely.... shit i think there were even a couple floor holes to get down/up a level so they could get away (cuz of course that way in/out was a dis/advantage for both cops and entrepreneurs alike) and yeah....

that fortress building that jane byrne once occupied became the best building to sell drugs in out of the whole cabrini-green complex, so yeah that's one hell of a legacy to leave behind.... and in the end did her publicity stunt work? i think she was up for re-election in '83 and i sure seem to remember harold washington becoming mayor around then, dying at his desk or whatever, and then there prolly was some interim mayor i dont remember before everybody's guy richie daley showed up to claim his MAYOR FOR LIFE birthright..... that is until he got tapped on the shoulder by someone shadowy and authoritative and they said "hey it's rahm's turn. cut a few more nice deals for yourself and GTFO" and yeap, the drum beats on....

so thank you for your indelible contributions to chicago history and culture, miss byrne. and i hope they welded the back door to your cemetery shut so nobody can jack you during your eternal housing project.

If I remember correctly, the '83 race was Byrne, Daley, and Washington, with Byrne and Daley splitting the white vote, Byrne and Washington splitting the goo-goo vote (you might call this "the Ben Joravsky vote" today), and Washington ultimately coming out on top. Then when Washington died, David Orr took over, but the City Council blacks, who were in a constant struggle with the City Council whites throughout Washington's administration, said that Chicago elected a black man and therefore there was a mandate for a black successor, so David Orr was told to step aside for Gene Sawyer, and now David Orr is like County Clerk for life in exchange for ceding City Hall to Surrogate Harold for a couple years.

You must not listen to 'BBM traffic. Bart Shore consistently refers to it as the "Byrne Interchange."

Byrne's stay at Cabrini Green will be remembered for many years to come. I give her credit for not going the easy route, which happens all too often in politics at all levels.

Washington had a memorable on-air exchange with Ed Bradley, when he dissed the CBS man by saying "You call yourself a pressman?" Byrne at least was civil and would never stoop to dissing a high-profile media member, who was in no way out of line before Washington went after him.
