That was sort of the vicodin version of those songs, but they were so good when we saw them.
And that song is great every time 8)

Can't wait until they come back again. If Pitchfork was smart (they usually aren't when it comes to lining up potential collabs) they would have Sleater-Kinney and Ex Hex on the same day and allow for a couple songs together. [swoon]

I saw Ian Hunter at Park West last night. I think I was the youngest guy there. By 9 pm the crowd was high as fuck on Miller Lite, Lipitor, and Viagra. It was one of those seated shows for old Boomers. By 11 pm some of them were trying to stand and I actually saw two guys fall over. One guy fell into a woman's lap at the table right in front of me.

I was always a huge Mott The Hoople fan. I think I still have every LP they ever made. I'm too young to have seen them live, but I've never seen Hunter put on anything less than a great show. Last night was no exception.

The band was road tight and professional and these guys rocked like hell. But the real stars were the songs. Hunter has songs for days. Even newer stuff that I had never heard was great.

They even played "Sweet Jane" which just might be the greatest rock and roll song ever. I've played that song in every band I've ever been in. I even made the jazz combo play it at my wedding.

Freedy Johnston opened the show, just him and an acoustic guitar. Man, he got fucked up quick after he played. He kept shouting, "I LOVE YOU, IAN!!!" and charging the stage whilst flapping his arms like a big bird and doing a goofy dance. Finally, a security guy made him sit down.

I have never met spanky and thus, I have only heard the legends of his huge head, but I bet spanky would look like a veritable pinhead were he to stand next to this drummer:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ho20A3JCUlI

I first saw Ian Hunter live in 1980 when I was 16 years old. It was at Cahn Auditorium on the Northwestern campus. Last night he played a song with the lyric: "I can't believe that you're still here. I can't believe that I'm still here." Very poignant for me. Then the band blew into "Dudes". A good rock and roll show.

This relates to 2015 concert thread but I felt this would suffice. Groupon is offering Nickelback tickets for $20 for their show in July at First Midwest.

Quote:
The Deal
•One G-Pass ticket to see Nickelback – No Fixed Address Tour
•When: Friday, July 10, at 7:30 p.m.
•Where: First Midwest Bank Amphitheatre
•General admission to the lawn
•Door time: 6:30 p.m.
•Full offer value includes ticketing fees
•Click here to view the seating chart

Ticketing Options
•$20 for general-admission lawn (up to $32 value) [Limited number of tickets available at this special price]
•$25 for general-admission lawn (up to $32 value)

Nickelback
•Stone-cold proof of Nickelback’s popularity: over 50 million albums sold worldwide
•Noteworthy recognitions: 9 Grammy nominations, 12 JUNO Awards, 2 American Music Awards, 6 Billboard Music Awards, and a World Music Award Recipient for World’s Best-Selling Rock Artist
•Award that no other band except Nickelback won in the 2000s: Billboard’s “Rock Group of the Decade”
•Single that turned casual listeners into lifelong fans: “How You Remind Me,” which is certified by Billboard as “Top Rock Song of the Decade” and “Most Played Song of the Decade” by Nielsen SoundScan
•Other singles that became staples of playlists all over the globe: “Photograph,” “Someday,” and “Rockstar”
•Proof that Nickelback is just getting started: they’re about to release their eighth album, No Fixed Address
•New single that brims with the fury of protest songs from the classic-rock era: “Edge of Revolution”

I think the Groupon copy writer had a lot of fun with this one.

Is a groupon for a concert in July of next year really necessary yet?

I honestly don't know who Nickelback is and I think I'll keep it that way. They appear to be a punchline
to many jokes about bad and pathetic music.

Yes. I so wish I could sound like I've been constipated for 16 years anytime I sing.

Rhett Miller tonight @ City Winery

I like Rhett Miller a lot, but man is City Winery stuffy and full of old rich people. The sound is actually great at this place (maybe best sound in the city?), but I feel like a turtleneck-wearing dweeb without a turtleneck when I go in there.

He is doing a "100% request show" - everybody can fill out a card on the way in and write down a request. That should make it interesting for sure. He has a hard time with lyrics when he fills out disown set list. :drunken:

Anyone have suggestions for eating in that area? I don't want to eat there. Someplace a little more low-key?

Maybe worse clientele and food prices than CH, but at least there is a live show.
So it all balances out to the level of "spanky is a loser" still.

Au Chavel.

And I think you need a AARP card to get into City Winery.

And what the hell is this filling out a card for an all request show? Is this person deaf, and can't hear requests from the crowd?

Mike I came to jump to your defense but I have to say I have to tap out here. My girlfriends parents got really
good tickets to see this last week from their other kids. They are in their mid 60s and weren't interested as they
had seen it before but went because it was a gift. Enjoy the show. Watch out for oxygen tanks and walkers.

i'll be attending skinny puppy / frontline assembly / haujobb at the vic on dec 9th.

i missed skinny puppy in february of this year cuz i was holding out to buy 3 ~$40 tickets for me and my 2 friends, but the one friend (who makes way more than me) kept saying i dont have to do that and he'll get them. and then he did.... for him and ol girl. by the time i found out the show was sold out.

but whaddya know? just like squarepusher in nov 2012 and july 2013, skinny puppy is actually playing here twice in a (calendar) year! and this time they actually have opening acts that i give a fuck about! i remembering being a yute and listening to haujobb's freeze frame reality a whole bunch circa 95-97.

$39-40 for the ticket and jamUSA/vic/whoever managed to squeeze $11-12 of convenience charges and surcharges and taxes out of you. right bunch of proper Caller Bobs, but it's not as bad as ministry's 3rd-4th "OK THIS IS THE LAST ONE" tour for $69........ ministry will be playing shows next year, of course. if anyone wants to see a drunken al jourgensen play mostly new shit (and maybe forget the words to some of your oldschool favorites like NWO) then drop the $40-80 and have fun kids!

I gotta think they'd throw you out of City Winery for shouting out song suggestions. (Actually, taking the requests ahead of time gave him time to "brush up" on lyrics/music, etc. This was for any song, not just his songs).

I'm not sure I can stand going back to CW again. Not for another 30 years or so at least. The crowd was so old and quiet that the opener (Salim Nourallah) spent most of his time between songs making fun of them. It was hysterical and most of them were offended.

My "problem" is with Trans-Siberian Orchestra.

You go ahead and do what you do. With as many people as you want to do it with.

Going to see Volcano Choir at Turner Hall on Sunday evening. The group that runs the
theater wanted to move it to the Riverside ( like they did with spanky's show to see
Sleater-Kinney ). The band told them no because they wanted a more intimate and
smaller venue. Really happy about that. Should be a nice capper to Thanksgiving
weekend. Hopefully we get a Bon Iver tune or two, being the last show on the tour
and them playing "at home"

I have about one more week to get a refund on that S-K show because of the venue change. Strongly considering doing that - how can they move it from a SRO/GA venue to one with all seats is unthinkable to me.
