The Sox are pretty profitable.

Any person would be stupid to buy the Sox and then move them. The growth potential is in Chicago. You don't give up on a population center like Chicago to move it to a much smaller market. You build up the team in Chicago and let it grow there. The Clippers, who are basically the White Sox of LA in terms of popularity, just sold for $2 billion. Do you think he was considering a move to Los Alamos?

Do the White Sox receive revenue sharing payments? Could an owner sucker San Antonio/Charlotte/Vegas into building a stadium, sign a local TV deal, and then become a recipient of revenue sharing payments? Loria has been doing very well with that formula.

They are not very profitable, they have had years where they made money, but even the best years are not in the realm of other teams best years. Also, the downside has been very limited.

If you believe Jerry has done a poor job of growing or maximizing a potential market, then you would look to stay here. So, Brick you think Reinsdorf has done a poor job of ownership over 35 years here in not being able to connect to the Sox fan base?

Are Sox fans happy about this? Id think you'd at least keep an open mind. Im not saying Reinsdorf is a bad owner, but he doesnt spend a ton. Maybe the next guy/group will?

Most people who analyze these things for a living say the Sox were pretty profitable. No, they may not have done as good as other teams but that is the point. They are a profitable team that also has growth potential. They've had down years and the attendance lately can't have helped but it's not like the Sox haven't been making money.

They've done a pretty bad job of building up a fan base and made many key mistakes.

I basically ignored the Sox for 10+ years prior to 2005(Note: 2005). I probably will again if they aren't competitive this year. I'm pretty unhappy with the current direction of the team. Robin is still here. The payroll is way too low but it's still early. They did not follow up 2005(Note: 2005) very well.

I doubt you'd get many arguments from anyone that say that Jerry did a good job of building or maintaining the fan base.

Ho-ho-ho

He'd have a field day with that place

I could see him screaming in Reinsdorf face about the stadium facing the wrong way

I don't know. You had stability for a long time. The older fan will remember the shaky times near then end of the Allyn family's ownership and then the shoestring years with Veeck, as much fun as some of them may have been. I really don't think the team would move, especially with such a sweet stadium deal, but you never know what might happen.

Anyway, it's possible it's not true. I might win the CSFMB Jason Goff Award.

According to Forbes, the White Sox lost $2.7 million last year.

They made $23 million the year before.
$11 million the year before that.
$27.6 million the year before that.
$26.4 million the year before that.

They are doing ok in Chicago.

You don't move a team from the city of Chicago to fucking Raleigh. You know how retarded that sounds?

If the Sox ever left Chicago there would be 5-10 franchises begging to move in and be Chicago's AL team. The Sox sit on a fucking goldmine, why the hell would they move? Seriously?

New Owners: We are considering moving to Boise.
City Of Chicago: Here is a brand new stadium!
New Owners: We are no longer considering moving to Boise.

Anyone ever been to Idaho? Specifically Boise? Because Boise is terrible.

The whole state is eerily similar to Wisconsin. Except instead of Idaho having that charming Wisconsin "hey guys the whole state doesn't have to look like it's from the 70's" quality, Idaho is much, much newer looking. But other than that and the mountains they are the same state.

Dunn's expiring contract and Alejandro De Aza do not constitute fire sale. John Danks is still being paid.

Idaho is filled with ultra-right wingers, Mormons, weirdos. Wisconsin is full of normal people who like the Packers and brandy.

The Sox have trouble drawing 25K fans here. Does anybody really think they would draw any better in cow/potato towns like Raleigh or Boise?

People in Montreal are making a lot of noise about getting baseball back. They had a 3 game preseason series with the Blue Jays and Mets that sold out the Olymipic stadium.

I thought about this a lot when Jerry was threatening to move to Florida. If the Sox ever left I would become a Tigers fan.

No way in hell does baseball come back to Montreal until there are shovels in the ground on a new ballpark. The city and province have both sunk an absurd amount of money into Stade Olympique over the years, and the province was just dragged kicking and screaming into helping to fund a new arena in Quebec City (which is coming along nicely). Not only does there have to be a new park, it's probably going to have to be privately funded.

I'd love to see Montreal back on the map, but I don't think people there are serious about supporting a team full-time. Baseball doesn't really have a big spot in French-Canadian culture like hockey does. The Expos were bigger among English speakers, and there aren't as many English speakers in Montreal as there used to be now that the language laws have set in. Do you know why "Tim Hortons" is written without an apostrophe? Because apostrophes aren't used to denote possession in French, therefore the sign is only in English, and therefore illegal in Quebec. Montreal got a team before Toronto because Montreal used to be the most important city in Canada, but now Toronto is.

One need only invoke the old "Grass is Always Greener" chestnut, and the folly of such a thing is laid bare.

I'd have briefly considered the Cardinals, but likely would've gone with the Dodgers.

Of course, but maybe it would be an option for expansion.

Does this sale have to do with Reinsdorf's failed coup of the commissioner's office? Does that have something to do with why he wants to cash out now?

Doesn't MLB / Commissioner have to approve the sale and agree on the buyer? With Bud on his way out...maybe Reinsdorf trying to get something done before his buddy leaves.

The rest of the owners have to vote too. Reinsdorf's little attempted coup is going to bite him in the ass big time.
