When the CEO of BlackBerry tried to buy the Phoenix Coyotes in order to move them to Hamilton, the NHL flipped its shit, saying that he was buying a Phoenix team, not a Hamilton team, which would cost much more than one in Phoenix, and also there will never be one for sale because fuck Hamilton. When this went to court, the other three leagues filed amicus briefs in support of the NHL, so I suppose baseball's stated policy is the same: unoccupied markets are the property of the league, and there's not a Las Vegas team for sale.

Incidentally, the NHL went to court over this so they could sell the Coyotes to...Jerry Reinsdorf.

Of course, all of this assumes that a Las Vegas team would be worth more than a Chicago team, which I highly, highly doubt.

considering the Sox report tickets sold for each game, I would easily bet a team in Las vegas does much better in terms of attendance as the casinos would buy seats, if the building was designed with that in mind. In AZ and CHI, they sell the special section all the time. Party areas, Pool areas, etc sell out. I would have a jacuzzi level, I would have a private bar level, the party areas in a LV Dome would be non stop sold out with all the events there. Have a blackjack table area! Slots! etc etc Give me 25,000 regular seats and another 25,000 of skybox/party seating.

The Cubs and pretty much any professional team does this as well, biggie.

Do you really think there was 35,000 people in Wrigley during some of those September games?

I know that is the way the Brewers report it also.

All teams report it that way now, even the teams that say they don't: the new "honest" Florida Panthers are reporting crowds in the 7,000s while they're lucky to have half that.

Sports teams that get public funding for their facilities should have to report turnstile counts, not tickets sold, nor the even more insidious "tickets distributed," where the crappy mid-2000s Boston Bruins would "distribute" 5,000 tickets to themselves an hour before puck drop and then just shove them back up their ass and call it a sellout.

they all do, the point was that some of the games that the Sox had 1,000 people at and reported 8,000 wouldnt happen in vegas.

Why are casinos going to send someone to another place where they can gamble and drink and swim?

Pretty much their whole business is built on keeping you at their casinos.

Of course. A stadium close to the strip but with parking for the locals could work.

It won't be a casino though.

This place feels like Las Vegas Sports Fan Message Board sometimes.

That would be great for 1 weekend a year. But what are the Las Vegas "Insert Team Name Here" going to do when the Atlanta braves roll into town for a 4 game series? They can't even fill their own stadium when they are good. Do you expect Braves fans to travel 2000 miles when most of them wont even travel 10-20?

It won't be a casino though.

They'd organize party packages. Dinner at Wynn Steakhouse, limo/party bus to Wynn party deck, then limo/party bus back to XS or casino.

Yes please!!!

all those people need a place to stay, a place to eat. When they have bowl games, the ECD, concerts, most of the people dont stay there, they come in for the vent and they do end up gambling at the hotel they stay at.

Addtionally, this type of facility (Stadium) is ready to go...whichever league would approve it, do you think it hasnt been run by the casino powers that be.

Stay at the Wynn for the Cubs weekend and get the Free Wynn Party deck for a game, etc etc...the promos are endless....every casino wants some development for some team

It is actually what the Sox should be doing, everything should be focused on these group deals. Even Tampa does well in group sales.

The Vegas Group sales would be great.

Tuesday night in Vegas...Costco regional managers renting the pool deck, IBM copier sales renting the couch area, etc etc...no other place in the country has the visitors they do.

I'm not saying Vegas can't have a team and get support from the casinos. They can't have it also be a casino unless it sucks as much as the airport does.

Honey, I'm going for a weekend to see my beloved team that left Chicago is a much easier sell than Honey, I'm going for a weekend to gamble the college funds and rub fake boobies.

A strip club inside the stadium! Great idea! If they allowed sports betting on site that would just be perfect.

Another selling point

But just like any team that gets a big draw, you better get a large % of people that are just there for the party and Vegas has that.

people wont care if the team is the Vegas Rollers v the TB rays, they will go because the COMPANy rented out the Vodka deck!

There's some serious voodoo economics going on with all these proposals for Las Vegas sports teams.

No there isnt.

this isnt about anyone claiming it creates some amazing pop in the economy. It's just an attraction and supplies some jobs for the people that live there. i am sure there is a document somewhere that has some pumped up numbers, but you cant measure the potential $$$'s dropped in a casino by the fans that come into town.

I'm reminded of David Foster Wallace's account of the AVN Awards and how it's synced up with the Consumer Electronics Expo so that cell phone dealers from Philadelphia can pose with porn stars and tell them to "show a little more bush." That said, the only thing worse than lowbrow Las Vegas is middlebrow Las Vegas.

...and what do you think happens in Vegas during the week?

NeighborWorks® America - National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling(NFMC) Place Based Training 2015 - 250 people
American Ambulance Association - Annual Conference and Trade Show 2014 - 500 people
Outotec - International Flash Smelting Congress 3 people (joke)
National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers - Drug Meeting and Seminar 2014 - 500 people
Traders Expo Las Vegas 2014 - 5000 people
LRP Publications - 23rd Annual National Workers' Compensation & Disability Conference - 4300
2014 DEMA Show - Diving Equipment & Marketing Association - 10,000
Live Design International 2014 - 15,000

the city averages 150,000 a people each week in town for various seminars, shows, etc. people trying to convince others to buy their crap.

The ability to invite buyer to an event afer the show and work them further, before you got them a hooker is how this shit goes.

A stadium designed to 'entertain' would be a huge hit.
